Just doing a liitle checking - a home out in Boone might be coming for sale..what is the area like? Rob and I both would probably have to find new jobs..but the house is right up our alley. I believe we stayed out there but at the time we were just enjoying vacation time. Suggestions or observations of that area are welcome!

I went to college there for 4.5 years. It's a great place to live if you don't mind the outrageously cold winters. The climate there feels like you're as far away from NC without leaving the state. The college town feel is really centered around boone too. As soon as you're a few miles out of town its just a handful of deeply rooted mountain communities. The best season is summer and there's lots of fun stuff to keep you busy. Two things I got sick of were the hippies and the hills. Everything involves an uphill climb at some point. I came to like the Asheville area a little more because it has flat land between the mountains.

X2 on Asheville. The other thing about Boone, there may be snow in the ground for months at a time and it seems to rain a lot!. Not to mention if you moved, that's a mile high elevation change....
I really like Boone, and all the winter and summer outdoor activities

I live outside Boone - wouldn't change where I live compared to all the other areas I've lived in North Carolina. That said, I don't know what you all do for a living, but good paying jobs are harder to find in this location compared to any other location...... salaries are lower, though the jobs are the same.

How cold is "outrageously cold"? Does it drop down to 30* once or twice during the winter?

Johnny, I didn't say "you must be stupid to live in this place during winter cold" like upstate new York. It felt colder in boone at 25 degrees than Montana at -25 degrees. Not what you'd expect in nc.

Point taken . More curious than anything.

Hahahaha. Smart Ass New Yorker.

In all seriousness, I've heard great things about Boone and Asheville. Living in the mountains is awesome if you can find work there. I used to spend a lot of time in the Adirondacks in Upstate NY when I was younger. The mountains are the best.

A bunch of guys have told me that the people in Boone and Asheville are super crunchy. Are there any "must see" spots up in that neck of the woods?

Johnny- Definitely some crunchy kids up in that area. Spent 5+ years there and as long as youre not in the university area or +/- 2 miles, the crunchies can be avoided. Just don't go to hippie hill, they will kill you with kindness.

There are so many great areas that are within 30 min of the surrounding areas. Trails, fishing, skiing, hiking, camping, lots of incredible golf courses.

By the way, I really hope its not this house:
"On one wall a large red pentagram has been spray painted on — another reference, this one to a local rumor that satanic activities took place in the residence."

Super crunchy? What the hell does that mean?

cmon meaty your from the land of granola........ you got this one. ;)
yeah i know SoCal was more lattes and hair salons but........

as far as must sees, there are a few cool spots for sure. I tried finding a few last summer I had known well in the past but the place has changed and my memory must have faded.

Linville Gorge Wilderness is close by and deepest gorge east of Mississippi.

Swinging bridge at grandfather mtn.... unfortunately not the rush it used to be

tons of fun to be had in Pisgah..... southern end is my preference near brevard
Johnny come out to the UC cruising the parkway event in Oct. Lil wheeling and a great ride from pisgah to mitchell.

I lived in Hendersonville, NC for 5 years prior to moving here in SC, loved it there. I chose Hendersonville because it was in the mountains where I wanted to be and the tax base was less than in Buncomb County (Asheville). Heather and I still own 3 acres on the side of a mountain in Ednyville which is part of Hendersonville. We do plan to sell at some point, just keeping it as an investment at this point.

I can tell you that Boone is generally at least 10 degrees colder than in Hendersonville during the winter months and Hendersonville averages 8 degrees cooler than where I am now.

I would look hard at what work is available in the area before anything else. The farther you get away from Asheville and Hendersonville the fewer jobs you'll find.
