Because our rigs are getting up there bolts are going to break. Does anyone have a favorite tool for centering the center punch and or template/jigs for drilling these things out? Esp the rear valve cover bolts.

I pulled my skid to replace my rad and thought I was missing a bolt (of course the center diff crossmember bolt), ordered one, and then when I went to install the plate I noticed that bolt was sheared off. Good times.

Weld a nut to remnant is my fav.

I do not have a welder. I am currently trying to get my keyed lug nut off. I am considering using JB weld to stick a nut on the outside of the lugnuts. Might be an option if you have access to the the stud and you wouldn't end up epoxy welding the nut to the frame.

I replaced all of my locking lugs on my 02 years ago and just did the same on my 06 last week. After 18-23 years of service / tire rotations using the ughhh dougahh guns the key just wears out. I believe they sell universal keys / extractors specifically made for this exact situation.

I have thought about epoxy, but I actually have a 25yr old wire feed 110 welder. I might try this.

Or I might try to figure out a clamp on jig to perfectly center the punch and a “collar” of sorts to further center and align / level the drill bit. I have seen these in wood working.

Keyed lugs, are no match for a cheap tool.

Every snapped one needs a careful appraisal and there are many different methods for getting them out. Some are successful at times and utter failures at others.

But the one universal that comes with any broken bolt is excessive amounts of vile language. So I'm going to say swearing is what works for me 😎

Dremel with a flex shaft and carbide burr, about 3/4 the size of the bolt. Goes through the bolt in a minute; there's not a bolt on the truck that a carbide burr won't eat through. Grab the remaining wire with needle nose pliers and you're back in business.
