Anyone else here have bad mojo with Bank of America? I can't stand them, they get my blood boiling like nobody.

Episode 1: Spring of 2003
I went in to the local branch to close my account, didn't like their fees. I have about $60 in their hands. I asked for my money and was informed that there would be a $50 fee for closing my account. I did my best to ask for the manager without any profanity. The teller went back, I waited...and waited...'til she came back. She said, "Actually, the fee is $50 for each account," so to close my checking and savings I would OWE THEM $40!!. I was escorted from the branch by security. Without my money.

Episode 2: Summer of 2005
I just moved back to Tucson, and could finally cut my ties with the evil corporation for good (or so I thought). So I went into the local branch and worked out the paperwork to close my account. No fees this time, no explanation of their previous attempt to steal from me either. Although they were loathe to let go of my money I left with no official relationship to BofA. Or so I thought... One month later I got a statement of account from them. Apparently I owed them somewhere around $100. Their breakdown was something like this:
-$5 - fee for no direct deposit into checking account.
-$15 - overdraft protection fee (to transfer from savings)
-$5 - overdraft transfer to checking (from savings)
-$35 - fee for overdrawn account (savings)
etc...
It took me 2 or 3 months, countless phone calls, and a dozen visits to get them to reverse the charges and really close my account.

Episode 3: Summer of 2006
I received a nice birthday present from my sister (financially luckier than most of the population) in the form of a cashier's check...from Bank of America. My credit union wanted 10 business days to release the funds from me, so they suggested I go to BofA and get the cash. Ok, I'll try again. I got to the teller at BofA who informed me that because I didn't have an account with them, they would charge me a fee of 5% to cash the check. I kindly pointed out to her that the check was from Bank of America. "Doesn't matter," she said, "you don't have an account here, so you have to pay the fee."

Episode 4: Recent months. Final Chapter?
Sucked into the clutches of the dark side once again through a cleverly disguised credit card offer that I failed to notice was from BofA, I must deal with the evil corporation once again. I decided once again to purge them from my life, and called to pay off the credit card.
Listen to menu, press 5 to make a payment, more menu, enter your account, more menu, waiting, etc... fast forward 10 minutes or so, "To make a payment and accept the $25 fee for our convenient phone service, press 1." $25 for what?!? A computer that reads dial tones?!? Fine BofA, you've defeated me. If it means I'll be done with you, I'll pay. "1." Computer: "Thank you, your payment of $87.00 has been accepted." WHAT?!? $25 and I can't specify the amount? I immediately called and managed to find a real person, then that real person's real supervisor, who informed me that they would go ahead and take the full payment for me, but would have to charge a $25 fee for their convenient phone service. :censor: Eventually I convinced them to drop one of the $25 fees, but they would not drop both. :bang: Fine. Make the payment. I kindly informed them that their service was awful, they were easily the worst corporation I've ever had to deal with, and that in a perfect world they would all die of cancer. (Ok, maybe I left the last part out.)
Well, I've just received my 3rd statement from them since that day that says I've not payed them.

I guess what I'm saying is, does anyone want to start a Fight Club?

Wow. That's an impressive list of horse****. It always amazes me that banks can bury "charges" in their fine print, and pull them out of their ass any time they want.

11 or so years ago, I opened an account with NationsBank in VA. Never an issue. All fees were disclosed up front. Fine institution.
Couple of years later, BofA buys them out. No issues at first. Only noticable change was my next debit card said BofA instead of NationsBank.
6 years ago I move here. I decide to open a savings account. And I want it linked to my checking account so I could use my checkcard, split my direct deposit and use it for overdfaft protection. Can't. Cos I opened my account through NB, I can't link it to my new BofA acct. 5 years after the merger. Ok. Fine. I'll close that acct and use the balance to open 2 new accts.
Now there are fees. $3 monthly maintenance fee. A fee to visit the lobby tellers. A fee to go below minimum balance. On both accounts.
Fine. I'll deal with it for now.
Then, they start charging me $10 for using overdraft protection. One time, that fee put me into overdraft. So I also got an overdraft fee. Since I already had no funds, they charged me an overdraft fee for having insufficient funds to cover the 1st overdraft fee!
That was the last straw.
I open an account with 1st Nat'l Bank of AZ, pay off what I owe BofA, and figger I'm done with it.
For one full month, I continued to get a daily email of my account balance from BofA. So I log into online banking. Only it tells me I have no valid accounts and no option to change my preferences.
So, get that taken care of and I think everything's fine.
6 weeks or so ago, the Fed shuts down FNBofAZ and sells their assets to Mutual of Omaha.
So, now I need to find another new bank.
IH8Publicly-traded-companies!!! :flipoff2:

My last war with them was ~15 yrs ago, IMHO they have the suck thing down to a fine science. The CU's get all of our biz now.

Never had an account with them, but several people close to me have. Charges for everything, and especially the one for actually talking to a teller (how dare their customers assume they can talk to their bank face-to-face  ?) have kept me far, far away from them. I started banking with First Interstate many years ago, whom Wells Fargo bought. That was a fun experience- they used to suck pretty bad themselves, but every time I started looking in to switching banks Wells Fargo bought the damn things. Then they got a little better, and I quit looking.

Wife banks at Desert Schools, and if I had to choose another bank they'd get my business.

Yep I got into the Wells F**k-up deal the same way, almost forgot about that lovely mess, thanks for the reminder!:flipoff2:

Howdy! I agree that C U's are the way to go. My brother left Valley Bank/Bank One/Chase Bank after more than 30 years because they got mad at him for being friendly and knowing his customers by name. Their teller service is designed to drive you nuts till you do all your banking online. John

CU's rock!

I originally joined Saguaro Credit union back in the late 70's. They were later bought out by DMFCU and recently Vantage West. I feel they are there to make me money, not vice versa.

X 4 on Credit Unions, Desert Schools FCU has been the best customer service experience bank I have ever dealt with...

I used them briefly in the early 90's. Their fees and other bull**** pissed me off so I left. I opened up at Norwest in 95, they were bought by Wells Fargo years ago. I've been there ever since, always no fees and good service.

I'll never put my money back in a bank. Pima FCU has my savings, checking, mortgage, HELOC, and all my future business. I actually make money on the accounts there! What an effing concept!

I needed the outlet for my frustration last night after getting that last bill. I can't say that I'm glad you had similar experiences, but it's a little comforting that I'm not alone. When I see businesses like BofA, and far too many others these days, succeeding on such a massive scale I think I'm in crazy town and I'm the only resident.

I have 5 accounts with BofA (Personal, 2 Business accounts, 2 savings accounts) and while I get charged for having the accounts ($12 a month  ) is high I have never been charged to talk to a person. And I better not EVER be.

Heaven help you of you get low on your balance with them. Despite the fact that on the 14th you made a purchase AND YOU HAD THE MONEY IN THE BANK THEN BofA actually clears the transaction on the 17th and if you are low THEN... well guess what? $35 NFS charge. I actually heard a branch manager tell a customer "well we don't ever believe the actual account balance anyway, especially from the ATM, we'll see what the actual teller has to say" as if it would be different. :hhmm:

All that aside, my number-one  with them is the way they pander to illegals:

Want a credit card? Can you breathe? No problemo senor... here you go. Then when said illegal is deported or decides to not to bother repaying said credit card guess who gets to pay for it? Hint: It's not the CEO.

Want to send money back to whatever hell-hole you illegally came from? Again, no problem, no fees, no biggie. We just get to use your illegally begotten funds for a day and charge interest to other banks on it.

That kind of crap should be illegal.

All this talk of credit unions has got me thinking...

I just had an issue where the payment was made before the due date but POSTED after the due date so I got a late fee....and pending interest hick due to said late payment (which they show as having received before the due date)

Howdy! I have had similar experiences with banks that POST payments/deposits days after they RECEIVE it. I don't think there are any state or federal rules that require them to do it all on the same day. Come on guys, it takes a long time for a clerk to find the right book and make all those ledger entries. What do you think this is, the AGE OF COMPUTERS, or something?? John

Man sorry to hear about your expriance, but that is the common story from all EX-BOFA'ers.

I actually work for a bank, M&I bank and not just because I work here as a banker, we are not a fee based organization. We currently are #18 in the nations top 20 banks and currently have bought 3 banks in the past 2 years.

I can go on foever about us and describe our personal service, but that will take forever. I would be more then happy to help any of you and answer any questions... Shoot me a PM or post up here.

I just had too, it was right up my alley....:D

CSC Federal Credit Union, or CSCFCU for short???

I like the sounds of that!

Might sound crazy, but it wouldn't be the first time a small group started a big thing. Tucson FCU was started in the basement of Tucson High (where I teach). It started just for THS teachers, spread to the district, and now it's the biggest CU down here.

My mortgage is with Country Wide, which if I'm not mistaken, was just bought by BofA :bang:. I'm kind of scared... my parents inherited an account with BofA and they got thrown through all kinds of messes, they finally got out after a year of it. I currently have Pima FCU and Desert Schools, First CU is good too, really good rates and service for car loans.
