Just recently bought a 2007 Toyota Land Cruiser and I am in the process of getting comfortable with it, as it is going to be my daily driver. I had a question about bluetooth audio and wanted to see what you guys recommended.

I bought this Land Cruiser with the full blown navigation head unit and backup camera. Everything is working well and as expected. I did want to see, however if bluetooth audio was reasonably possible. The guy who sold it to me gave me one of those FM Bluetooth transmitters but unfortunately it seems to have died after purchasing it.

I've heard people suggest replacing the head unit, however that seems like a job and not really necessary - everything already is working as intended. Another thing i've considered is one of those cassette player aux things... unfortunately my current phone doesn't have an aux port and I'd like the functionality to charge my phone and play audio at the same time.

Could one of you provide some suggestions on what I could do? Thanks.

I'm in the same boat. Recently got an 07 LX 470 and am searching for a true plug and play setup. So far, I can't find anything I'm comfortable with. Everything seems to have one issue or another. And even though some of them are minor, I'd rather not deal with a situation that is less than flawless.

So, in the meantime, I bought this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BTP3PQ6Y?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 It's a simple transmitter but has worked really well. No complaints.

I bought this bluetooth adapter for my 2006 to stream music: https://www.amazon.com/USA-BT45-TOY-Bluetooth-Select-1998-2014/dp/B0178G5RRE. It was really easy to install and has worked flawlessly for the four years I've owned my LC. I highly recommend it.
I looked at these briefly and I was somewhat interested. You mention installation was easy... could you explain more about what it was like?

Im also wondering if I can just not use the microphone that it comes with (as its ugly) and just use Bluetooth through the built in phone system in the head unit?

This is what the owner before me had and it for some reason just decided it was over 🤷‍♂️
I may consider buying another one but im not sure

Picked up an 06 today with Nav. I had full intent going in to setup a standalone DSP with a bluetooth optical in, and then amps/speakers and just bypass the factory system. But undisclosed by the seller, it had the BT45 interface already installed. It's super simple and seems to great. The system still isn't where I want it to be, but it's plenty salvageable until I come up with a plan and get a few other things taken care of first.

I'm a new owner of a 2007 LC whose previous owner installed a unit from GROM audio-- the unit "lives" in the glove box, has a wired microphone that you hardly notice mounted near the rear view mirror. It allows you to retain navigation, AC controls, etc. on your original touch screen, but allows Apple CarPlay, Google Maps, etc. on the same. I'll have to check after work on specific model if interested. You have the occasional bluetooth connection failures that I've experienced in almost every vehicle I've owned, but so far it successfully connects to my iPhone on its own almost every time I crank it.

Grom is a big expense, but totally worth it. My daily driver was in the shop for 2 weeks, so I had to drive the LX to work and it made the commute so much nicer having carplay. I don't think I could go back to fumbling around with the phone on a mount for my google maps.

Check out this link for the install. Easy Bluetooth Audio Solution for 100 Series with Navigation Unit - BT45-TOY - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/easy-bluetooth-audio-solution-for-100-series-with-navigation-unit-bt45-toy.1329424/#post-15461829. It's basically plug and play. You just need to access the back of the radio.

And yes, you can still use the OEM bluetooth for phone calls and just use the adapter to stream music. This is my exact setup. Keep in mind, your phone will need to be connected to but the OEM bluetooth and the adapter at the same time.
