We've decided on a spur of the moment weekend road trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway this weekend. (The 40 isn't quite ready for this trip) Any suggestions for bed n breakfast locations? We will be down by Grandfather Mountain and around Little Switzerland (kid likes gem mining touristy stuff) I'm pretty open to locations within a couple of miles of the parkway. Any ideas or previous good / great experiences? I do not want to rough it...this is a quick trip and we have to head back Sunday afternoon.

We've stayed at the Alpine Inn just down the road from Little Switzerland. Not fancy at all (no pampering) but there's a couple of rooms that are literally right on the cliff. They're the ones attached to the office. Worth a visit if those rooms are available but probably not if they're already booked. Haven't been there in about 3 years. I think it was about $125/night then.

I've heard good things about Celo Inn near Grandfather Mtn.

We got married at NuWray Inn in Burnsville, but it's probably 10-15 miles off the BRP.

Pisgah inn is nice

Is that the motel at the top of Pisgah? Passed it a few months ago while wandering. Camping, picnicking, hiking, etc all within spitting distance, if so. Looked like a good option for those of us (cough cough) who like to sleep under a solid ceiling of wood or sheetrock.

Mmmm feathery beds and a full breakfast...just sounds soooo much more enticing to me.

I've heard good things about the Green Park Inn (greenparkinn.com) in Blowing Rock - at least if you stay in the old historic section of the hotel - you'd be about 3 miles from one of the entrances to the BRP. If you get bored you could hit up Tweetsie, also, since you have kids. There's a gem mine right past Tweetsie also going towards Boone that is always busy.... Leaving Sunday would be easy since you'd miss most of the construction happening in Blowing Rock, plus they don't usually work on the weekends....

If you go to Blowing Rock, check on the ASU home football schedule and homecoming date. That will make finding a room nearby fairly difficult.

Also, remember that the speed limit on the parkway is 35-45mph. You're gonna be eating up a large chunk of the weekend just getting there and back, so be wise when selecting a stretch of BRP to explore. I think you've picked a good area with Grandfather and Little Switzerland. The resort there has both $$ and $$$$ dining options open to anybody. Have fun and keep us posted.

Yeah I got a rude awakening when I first hit the BRP up and was doing 75-80 down there.

homecoming was last week, this week the game is away - so no worries on extra 321 traffic ;)

We stayed in Marion at the Comfort Inn - APPARENTLY the fall drive is a BIG DEAL (sarcasm)

We had a great time! Thanks for the suggestions!

Another 20 miles west on 40 is Black Mountain. Some B&B's there, also a great old hotel called Monte Vista Inn. Stayed there 7 years ago and again this summer (under new owners). No tv's in the antique-style rooms, generous sized bathrooms, in-house restaurant and bar, very large lobby/sitting area (and others scattered over 3 floors), and lots of front and back porch seating. Walk to the ice cream shop across the street. Take A Hike Outfitters is maybe a mile away and always has a huge clearance section of clothing. Lots of good it does you now. Sorry.
