Blown engine help

Hi fellow mudders.

I dont even know where to start but my 03 Land Cruiser just died. It quickly overheated without indication and blew the cylinder head. Not sure if it was the timing belt, water pump??? I didn't want my mechanic to put time/$$$ into fully diagnosing.


Anyway, I'm in the Ft Lauderdale - Miami Area and was just putting it out there if anyone knows anybody who may be interested in making an offer for the entire vehicle as is to part out or repair. I don't even know where to begin as far as its worth so if anyone has any suggestions I'm open.

What's the value of the vehicle? Why do you want to get rid of it? You can find cheap 4.7s that swap in easily all day long. In your sig it says we would have to pry the LC from your cold dead hands, don't let a random engine failure steer you away from that. Throw 2k at a new engine and you have a cruiser that's ready to go.

My biggest challenge has been that ever since my divorce its my only vehicle. I commute 60-70 miles round trip and then another 40-50 miles during the day so even with gas low right now, I'm still at $600/month in gas. My choice is to throw in a new engine and everything else it needs to keep her running, or get something with good milage for the commute....I can't afford both right now...that was the plan as soon as I got flush from the divorce. Murphy!!!

s*** happens man, sorry to hear about the divorce. Of course all of us are going to try to convince you to keep the cruiser, but in the end, do what you gotta do. If you get a commuter, at least stay in the Toyota/Lexus family you'll still be welcome here.

And what are gas prices in Florida??

Man that sucks! My vote would be to keep your cruiser and buy an older corolla or prius. When things get stable then build up the cruiser!

there is a comp for you. If your truck was really clean, my guess is 7k? I have no clue... float it out on here for 7k and let the market decide. if its priced right it will sell quick.

I wouldn't count on getting $7k for it. Prices on (running) 100s have come way down. I agree with the others to fix it, but if you choose not to, I wouldn't base my decision on getting a lot for a 100 with a bad engine....even an '03

in NC low mileage 03's are selling for 12k... thats the thing about mud and craigslist. if its priced right, you will know it by the number of calls you receive.

First, I think you need to get an accurate assessment of what is actually broken. It sounds like you are trying to solve two many issues.

1.) Get a cheap gas commuter (old honda civic, or the like), if you are spending that much a month in gas, it'll pay itself off in a few months. Either way, you need something to get around.
2.) After you get an assessment of the actual cost to repair, and what is broken, then decide if you want to fix it and keep it, fix it and sell it, or sell it as is. If you know what is wrong, you'll probably get a better deal if you are going to sell it, then just saying "blown engine" and getting lowballed.

I agree that you need to know what caused the failure because these engines don't just fail without a good reason.

Maintenance? Your first go to was TB and water pump......when's the last time those were changed?

You'll be lucky to get $3-4k for it as is. Buy an engine for $1000 and spend the most fun 3-4 days you'll ever have and get back to enjoying it. Buy an old civic or Camry and sell it when you're done.

I'm with buddhA above. You'll regret parting with it. If you can afford to get a small commuter than save it until you find a used one or can rebuild. I sold my 60 years ago and for nothing...regret that.

I'm ashamed to admit I got a prius as a commuter about a month ago. My friends are not done shaming me yet, its a daily occurrence. I've only filled it up twice since I bought it so joke is on them. I'm still on the second fill its almost on the full line, wake up some mornings to find an extra line on the gas gauge compared to the day before, so it makes gas overnight.... 4 times the millage of the cruiser

None the less I'm not sure its worth the emotional pain, woke up to this on my car one morning.

@savir , you should consider a Mazda 3. 40mpg on the highway, way more fun to drive, comes in a manual 6 speed, and nobody will put stickers on your car
