I'm thinking about blacking out my grill and all of the front chrome accents. However, I do plan to keep the TOYOTA lettering chrome. If anyone has blacked out their grill please post pics. If you have time to explain your method and how it has endured, that'd be super helpful too. Thanks in advance!

I used rustoleam flat black and cleaned all the parts with acetone before spraying.

Not mine, I believe this is @BoxRocket's grill. I downloaded the image because I want to do the same.

I put Painters tape over the letters and ran my thumbnail around the letters to basically cut the tape so it was only covering them. Then I sprayed it with 5 coats of black plastidip. I pulled the tape immediately after the last coat. It's kind of difficult since the letters are so narrow, it's very easy to smudge the wet paint. Only pic i have so far, I'm very happy with it.

Sweet Rig! What year and is that the original color?

That Nightshadow Pearl is a sweet looking 80! Being a 97, the grill has been switched, hasn't it? I was thinking 93 was the last year of TOYOTA on the grill?...... Also, were all the TOYOTA pieces chromed? When I bought my 91, the grill was painted (by a 1st grader I believe!) so I'm not sure if I should try to remove all the paint so I can turn around and repaint the grill, while maintaining the chromed TOYOTA.

Yeah, it's an older grill. All the Toyota letters were chrome as far as I know. Hard to say what the guy did before you, he could have sanded the chrome down :(

True..... I may take some thinner to it tomorrow, and see what I find.

I Plasti Dipped mine. Probably put at least 5 coats on it. Took the grill off and all the chrome pieces. Cleaned it really well before spraying. Did it 2 years ago and it has held up really well.

Thinking of doing this as well. How do you remove the pieces around the headlights?

I didn't remove them. I just taped them off and sprayed. With plastidip, if you get overspray, you can just rub it off. Also, plastidip won't end up chipping, like spray paint will.

I dipped my front grill in anthracite and the emblem in black:

My 94 is pre-sombrero, FYI

3M 1080 satin black vinyl wrap over the chrome parts. It's all over ebay & amazon. Left the grille blades stock gray.
