I'm back from the BHCC with a brief report.

My new (to me) '85 CDN BJ70 performed perfectly on the trails and on the highway. My wife and I went through the Badlands and the Black Hills (Mt Rushmore etc) for some sight seeing before the off-roading. Mileage added this week was 3000 km, bringing the grand total to 384,000 km.

At 70 mph on the interstates, I was getting 20 mpg. The 3B was spinning at about 2500-2600 rpm when cruising in fifth. I had to take the RV lane on the hills, using 4th and sometimes 3rd to get up to the top.

This was my first off-roading experience EVER, and everyone was very helpful. I learned the hard way that running boards are not rock sliders! :)

I had the only 70 there and so was a bit of a celebrity. There were two 60s there, three stock-looking 40s, maybe a dozen modified 40s, and lots of 80s and 100s. A few 4Runners, Tacomas, and FJ Cruisers were there, too. Oh, and a half dozen crazy rock buggies, also.

I had a great time and I'm already thinking about pouring money into my truck and doing it again next year.

Cheers,
Dennis

Cool pics and congratulations on your choice of 4wd;)

I bet you want some new tyres ,right:D(the Nexan's are ok on the road;) )

Your 70 looks like it has a clean body, has it been resprayed?

Yeah, those tires were nice on the highway but not so great for mud or rock. I hope to get something more hardcore before I do that again. I think steel rims, too, instead of those shiny/fragile alloys.

The rear quarters have been resprayed, but I think it's been several years since that happened. There's absolutely no sign of any significant sheet metal repairs. The truck is 99.9% rust free right now and I'll be working hard to keep it that way (or better).

Cheers,
Dennis

Its good to have 2 sets of tyres if you have room to store them;)
Tyres are crucial on a BJ70 without a turbo because they can really sap the power with wind and rolling resistance.

I take it you had the HZJ70 when you were on the Caymen Islands?

The HJZ70 would have got along nicely with a 1HZ:D

Nice pictures. Great truck!

Did you buy that truck from a member that was advertising here? Was the truck out in BC.

It looks like it's in unbelievable condition for the age and being in Canada. The PO's must have seriously loved that truck.

Yes, I found it on the classified section here. It didn't sell when the PO advertised it, but the ad was still posted and valid 3 months afterwards. It was located in Summerland BC.

Cheers,
Dennis
