bj74 exhaust in vancouver

Looking for an exhaust for a bj74 in vancouver. I would prefer factory but doubt it. The tail pipe is rusted off at the muffler, so I would need from the flange before the muffler to the tail pipe. Or if it is custom made maybe the complete exhaust should be done. Any shop recommendations? What size or should I stay stock? What brand of muffler to be quiet?

ATEB in Burnaby has lots of experience with cruisers and can even fab you up a nice stainless exhaust if you like. $$$ for stainless, but they do good work. There are others, but they probably have the fastest turn around time and are rapidly becoming cruiser specialists.

Goldboy put a straight 2.5 or 3" on his BJ74.
I have personally heard it before and after.

Honestly its not really any louder.
His exhaust was leaking before so he did need something (but it was not that bad).
So I don't have a before and after comparison with a muffler at 100%.

Cruiser_guy's BJ60 has a straight exhaust and its not that bad.
The turbo helpls to quite it down. My non turbo BJ60 with muffller was not that much quiter than Cruiser_guy's BJ60.

Anyways, a straight exhaust will be cheaper, and better for your cooling.
Just make sure it follows the path of the old one. It helps to deflect the exhaust and sound out the back more.

I called Ateb and found that they wanted $1200 and I feel that it seems a little expensive or is that the norm?

if not then a 2 1/2" aluminized free lowing exahst with muffler and resonator and flex pipe is $850 here in the best shop in Calgary...

Not to speak for ATEB, however seeing their work I would make the following assumptions: 1) it includes an Areo Turbine 2525XL stainless muffler/resonator (At least the 2525). 2) It will be a 2.5" thickwall exhaust pipe. 3) It will include a flex pipe. 4) It will start at the turbo dump, and not simply be scabbed onto a cut chunk from the turbo dump. I doubt it is stainless at that price...and if it is that is a steal. Even if it is not, you will not need another exhaust for a long long time.

I was getting a bit tight, was running out of time before ACT2006, and ATEB was very busy, so I went to a local shop with an Aero Turbine 2525 in hand. He bent up a 2.5", did a good job, and I am happy with it. He also supplied a 2.5" flex pipe. There is not much room to bring through 2.5" at the framerail, so it takes time and work to get the angles and bends right. You are more then welcome to come look and listen if you like. The Aero Turbine I got does not have the resonator, and I do not find it too loud, however if you want very quiet then look to the XL at the end of the model number.

Ohhh, I think I kept all the stock exhaust, and it was not in bad shape. I'll have to look around through. Shoot me a note if interested...but your engine will be much happier with a 2.5 easy flow through system.

http://www.aeroexhaust.com/ Phone them and they will give you the name of the Cdn distributor in the prairies. I do not believe ATEB is a distributor, however they do have them in stock for thier own jobs, or maybe they are a distibutor now. If so, they may be able to supply you with one. ATEB also sourced the mandrel bends for their own installations. Cory bent all mine.

I run my 74 with the top down in the summer and I was wondering If you really noticed a signifcant power gain to even think of choosing a performance exhaust. Keep in mind I do have kids in the back seat. I have an auto with small tires and will be looking to get 32 or 33's and will I need the performance increase?

This is not an easy one to answer, depending on how deep you want to go...

For standard use the stock exhaust system seems fine, and Toyota engineers likely ran all the numbers and decided what system would work and not create too much restriction in airflow and getting exhaust gases out.

But...

Plunking a turbo in the path of the exhaust gases creates its own restriction. Anything you can do to decrease the effect of this restriction of airflow out (and don't ignore the in part too) will allow the engine to be more efficient, for a given workload. This could translate into say...a slightly cooler EGT for a given load, which means less fuel is being burned for the same work, which means not only less load on the engine, but greater efficiency.

So to my mind it is not so much about a performance increase. Rather it is an increase in engine efficiency; hence my earlier comment that your engine will be happier.

To my mind I would not spend big bucks putting a stock restrictive system back on. I would spend money in putting a less restrictive system on.

I have an ATEB custom 2 1/2" exhaust system on my BJ74 and would recommend them - high quality job. Don't put a 2" pipe on when you can go 2 1/2" - better mileage and power.

I think sound is the main issue and with top down will it be too loud with the aero exhuast?
