Getting back to the original question. I have the same winch and dont see how it can disengage if you are fully engaged and locked in?? Does yours have the locking pin as seen in my pic below? I know at times I have thought it was engaged and went to put the pin in and it wasnt. I have even spooled line like this but imagine it would pop out under load as yours is doing. Bottom line if you cant put the locking pin in, it is not engaged and if you dont have a locking pin you should get one.

Good call. "PIN,CLUTCH SHIFT LEVER LOCK" 38226-60040. That number comes up invalid in this market however. I imagine a suitable substitute could be fashioned.

I have looked at and photographed my winch. Yes, I do have the locking pin, however there does not appear to be a place to put it? My winch is engaged when the handle is pushed IN against the gear body, and disengaged (free spool) when the handle is pulled out away from the gear body. When engaged, I see no place to stuff a pin. Take a look and tell me where I'm going wrong?

WHERE DOES THE PIN GO.webp

It appears in the last pic that you are about half a hole away from being fully engaged and able to put your locking pin in. Whats stopping the shaft from coming out farther is the question?? Is the shifter handle hitting the body of the winch? I am wondering if your handle is bent because as you can see in my pic my handle is still straight up and down and a lot farther from the body of the winch when engaged then yours appears to be

Is yours engaged when the handle vertical? Nothing appears to be bent on the handle, hinge assembly or shaft that I can see...

Yup mine is engaged when the handle is pretty straight up and down as in the pic. When I remove the lock pin and pull the handle out to disengage it leans back away from the winch quite a ways. I will try to remember and take some more pics and / or a video in a couple weeks when I get home.

Weird... I did grab my spool and rock it forward and back while trying to engage the handle and the entire pin hole exposed itself, so you've helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I appreciate that, thank you! Is there a gear oil level that needs checking and an oil change that should be done on these periodically?

Yes. it takes just over 2 quarts of ATF. As I stated ealier in this thread I can fax my pages of the FSM pertaining to the electric winch to you if you would like them.

I'd very much like to get that but I don't have a fax...

Which type of Trany fluid does it take? Toyota? F? Dexron? I wonder if a full synthetic would reduce wear?

The manual states type F which doesn't exist any more. It has been replaced by Dex/Merc.

Thanks for that. Yes, it had nice red trani fluid in it, but it wasn't up to the fill hole, which is a bit odd, as there's no leaks and the outside gear casing is clean and dry. I just happened to have a full bottle of old Type F in my garage, which she happily drank a half quart of. Thank you for all the info!

Excellent. Does the pin now move far enough on it's own so you can insert the clip?

Well, it will... I put a new ball in the end of the shift handle which is preventing the handle from moving far enough to the right. I will remove the ball, shorten the threaded handle about an inch and put the ball back on. It's pretty plain to see (now) that the ball was the new variable that prevented her from going completely into gear. Human error! I had used that winch several times before putting the ball on the handle and she never popped out of gear without the pin in place. In fact, I had wondered what the heck that pin and clip were for!

Drain plug on bottom and fill plug on the side at the top behind the handle. It is visible in your pics
Did you install that safari snorkel? Do you have a 13B-T? I've been curious how the snorkel connects to the air filter box and if your kit came with the rubber cap that closed off your old air intake to the box...

Glad you got it figured out. As you know these are great winches and have a fast line speed. Curious do you have the factory remote with heat sensor?? On a side not I added a wireless remote to mine so I dont have to engage and disengage my winch as often and it makes it so much nicer for one person operation in or out of the vehicle

Yup its a 13BT and yes the snorkel kit came complete with everything including the cap for the airbox. If you click on my build thread link in my signature their are some pics and info from when I did the install. Starts on post #67. I don't know if things have changed but at the time the template that came with the 70's series safari snorkels was wrong

I do have the factory remote and it looks almost new. I wasn't aware there was a heat sensor?

Wow. Wireless remote... State of the art there!

No, I haven't added a snorkel yet, but none of the kits seem to be complete with everything needed to do the job.

Post up a pic of your remote when you get a chance please

There you go, and now that it's out when I'm not busy hooking it up to use it, I see the yellow over temp light! I've used it a fair amount hauling Jeeps out of predicaments, and it has apparently never gotten too hot. Must be a thermocouple in the motor. It says there's a buzzer in it also...
