I have a 1986 BJ74 LX which I've only had a few months. Recently I took the motor and solenoid off the winch (which was working perfectly before) to clean and paint the winch and motor assembly and put it back together. A couple days ago I got buried in mud in a creek bed and went to use my winch. It kept popping out of gear, and I had to manually hold it in to winch out which was dangerous because I had to stand in front of the vehicle instead of off to the side with the remote.

Any ideas on what I may have done to have it start popping out of gear? I tightened the motor back up to the gear housing nicely.

What winch is it ?

What in the world did you put on that perfect windshield cowl?

It's not on the cowl, it's on the hood. This BJ74 is not used for supermarket runs. SC is home to one of the most challenging off road parks in the country (Gulches) in addition to some excellent and challenging terrain practically everywhere one looks. I'm sure you're aware that it's a high lift jack...

My highlift jack is bolted down to the the tool box behind the front seats. Not in front of the windshield where it has a chance to come my way in a collision. I just spent 800 bucks on a brand new hood to address a previouis owner's attempt at turning it into a Land Rover......

To each his own, I suppose. That is such a nice truck to poke holes in the hood.

In frontal collisions, which are the most prevalent, the jack would be subject to being projected forward. In my case, away from the vehicle occupants. In your case towards the back of your skull. Appreciate your input though...

Yours as well. A very nice truck you have there by the way. I'll keep an eye in my rear view mirror for it.

I have a chassis manual with a section on the electric winch. If you have a fax available I can copy those pages and send them to you. Mine has a PTO on it so I have no hands-on experience with the electric to share with you.

If you don't like the jack on the hood, you're going to hate the 5 gallon diesel can and bracket I'm going to mount on the rear door opposite the spare tire. I'll be relocating the license plate to the center of the spare tire rim, and removing the license plate light shield that says TOYOTA 4WD across it. Oh no, more holes drilled! In order to make it functionally formidable, it must be modified, as unfortunate as that may be...

Or you can do what I did and get two cans.

Nice! Cops ever bug you because they can't see your tail lights?

Would love any details you have on that roof basket! Do you have an FRP under that?

There are variable-voltage LED lamps in the bumper under the swing-outs. They are tail, brake, turn and back-up.

It is an FRP top. The rack is a JDM Abia Works that I brought home on a trip to Japan 4 years ago.

Nice. Looks great! I need a roof basket...

Yeah, @cruiserdan.

Don't be such an OE fanboy.

It's unbecoming.

Yes sir! Right away sir! It's only been 35 years so it should be easy to make a clean break......

I'd stay away from the type that attaches to the existing drip rails. Mine had one like that on it at one time (prior to my aquisition) and it broke one of the drip rails. I had a fun time repairing it. The current rack mounts to a set of Thule Artificial Rain Gutters that I attached directly to the top with 8mm steel nutserts.

Oh, I did drill holes in the top to do that by the way........:rimshot:

Here is how it looks from the side. Note the welded on sliders....:hillbilly: This photo was taken prior to the installation of the Kaymar rear buper setup.
