Thanks for all the past info you guys.. great stuff...

Anyway under my hood I have 2 batterys 1 battery is different from the other..

The battery closest to the grill is a calcium battery and the other seems to be a regular lead acid battery, don't even know if they are the same amperage as the writing is Japanese.

I never have a problem with cold starts or when I run head lights, heater and radio. The batterys are holding a normal charge and seem to be working fine

Normally I would buy new, however everything is seems to be working so good, so I left it alone.

My question is what’s with calcium battery and the regular lead acid battery. is this odd ball or something good or what.

it is recommended to have the same size and type of batteries in a 24V system. in a 12V system then it isn't as critical if they are not the same.
(yes, i had a LJ78 12V system come in with factory dual batteries)

Start your truck, get the idle up a little, and check both batteries on their own for charging voltage. Do this with load and no load. Then report back.

I am going to take the 74 to my freind who is certified diesel machanic to test the battery's..

#2 Batt 13.04 lead acid

No diference under load.

That is very good and very unusual...

Matched batteries will have similar internal resistances, so will take charging more evenly...etc.

Typically mismatched batteries will show different charging voltages...up to and over 2V at times. As a result one battery will sulphate, and the other overcharge. The sulphated one shows up sooner. Even two batteries that are matched can show a difference over time, as they degrade at different rates, or something fails inside one and not the other (plating).

If you are that close, then perhaps run it, keeping an eye on things, with plans to buy two matched batteries of your choice. Did he load test both to see if one is weaker then the other? When you go into a very cold climate any weakness of the battery will be exposed (as opposed to the standing or charge voltage)

Any idear about the calcium batt, its a sealed unit with a green light on it?

Anyway thanks for your replie. I am going to change the batterys to crappy tire Eliminator soon, what CCA's would you recomend?

Oh can you confirm, my altenator is 30amps for 1986 red block?

Yes we load tested both, no difference
 
i have had the crappiest of luck with the eliminators from crappy tire. i use the white ones from Napa 1050 CCA and have had much better results....
each to their own...

Yes, it should be, which is equivalent to 60amps at 12V.

If I was looking at new batteries I would be considering the Orbital Extreme...Stock is a 27 series battery I believe.

Hi Gold Boy:

I would go with the size 27 battery that has enough CCA for your Cruiser (wouldn't be too much). The reason being that the higher the CCA you go, the thinner the plates are inside in order to produce that. For this reason, you will often notice that heavy duty batteries have lower CCA than the same sized regular batteries. The plates inside the HD batteries are going to be much thicker to resist vibration damage, but there won't be as many of them in there.

I have the Interstate Workaholics in mine...which I have had great luck with (Sheldon used to use the same ones in his BJ70). I've had them in my truck for three years with a Solar Converter, and I've never had an issue with them. They were roughly $100 CAD each at a local battery supplier.
