Can anyone tell me why diesel leaks from my filler cap after it has been filled right up?

With a full tank and normal driving around it always seems to have some leaking for about 100km or so.

Would it splashing around in the tank be enough to come back out of the filler?

No sure if you mean that you're actually are seeing diesel leaking from where the cap is or in the area underneath where the filler neck is.

I had a pinhole leak in the filler neck of my tank due to rust. It was about 6 inches down along the filler neck from the top where the cap was. It leaked every time I filled it up and until I went through a few litres of fuel. I would see the diesel dripping from that area...

This could be a possible reason for your leak.

Look for the O ring on the filler cap maybe it is old and it's broken

When you say full tank, do you mean where the bowser cuts out, or where you dribble the last few litres in so you can see a little lake of diesel at the top of the filler hole?

Thanks for the replies

It is around the underneath of the filler, coming out from the bottom edge of the filler flap and running down the outside body work under the filler flap.

The o-ring type gasket is actually good, it must have been replaced recently by the previous owner, however the filler neck hole is a bit damaged now I have looked at it again. it seems in the past someone has had issues getting the filler cap on and bashed it on possibly or something like that.

Hmm I might have a look at the filler neck for rust, and yes I am talking about just filling it until the bowser stops with the nozzle right into the hole.

haha no not as bad as that...

well i had some time to have a look at this tonight and i will explain with pics below.

this is what the leaking looks like, you can see the active drop from the cap.

mind you this is also after 200km of driving so about 20L of fuel burnt from filling up.

behind the filler looked like this, not active leaking so i think it is from the front.

can anyone tell me what all the wizardry is behind here???

damaged filler neck

filler cap

all cleaned up so i can check again where it is leaking from.

i went around the block and immediately there is diesel there again (in the pic you can make it out around the rubber seal but the metal was wet.

how can diesel get up here in such a short time????

All those hoses and pipes are part of the fuel evaporative system and to allow air out as you fill the tank.
I would ditch that fuel filler tube and get a used one, I got one pretty cheap from the wreckers.
The diesel sloshes around in the tank a fair bit.

What does the switch on the fuel door do? Is it part of an alarm?
I was missing the 2 rubber cushioners for the fuel door so after waiting on Toyota to order them and then forgetting about it, I pumped some black sealastic into the holes and then shaped them like the factory rubber.

Yeah seems like a good sealing cap and neck would be the go. any idea about compatibility with other cruisers??? BJ's are pretty rare for parts.

No idea about the switch, i dont see any fuel door alarms or lights.

I think troopy(rear) SWB and MWB are all interchangeable, the only difference is between petrol and diesel, which has the larger opening.
I fitted a BJ70 filler onto a FJ73 when I put a 1HZ into the 73
