So I have a Bj73. Just thought I'd start a new thread and post some pics of what I'm doing. I have taken out the old 3b motor wich was blown and just today went and picked up the 14BT motor that's going to drop in. It took awhile to arrive from Japan to BMI at slacks creek but I have it now so all good. I will be getting it in over the coming weeks and will post if I run into problems but after researching as much as I can I've been able to organise myself pretty good but if anyone has any tips let me know. So a couple of things

  1. Ne engine came with 8 bolt fly wheel so just need to grind down a few ribs in the gear box and will fit perfect. So no need to modify the 6 bolt 3b one
  2. Came with 24volt alternator so will replace with the one from 3b
  3. Stripped all the air con mounts and compressor off the 3b it will bolt up to 14 no probs by the looks
  4. Need to run return line from fuel pump back to tank
  5. Will use 3b starter motor as 14 didn't come with it
  6. Need to use the 3b sump or modify the 14 as the 14 has "wings"

Very interested in your project. I just got a BJ75 that has a pretty anemic 3BII in it and I know a guy selling a 14BT. He just wants me to buy the BJ60 he started to put it into as well...I don't need both.

Curious how much your 14BT cost you?

yeah from what ive reserched it should be really good!

Do they give you some test figures or guarantees regarding the engines condition? It will be a nice swap when finished and a good one for those who can lay their hands on one of these engines.

yep 6 months warranty they gave me internal pics etc to show condition of bore. The 6 months will kick in when i get the thing up and running on the road the guy was pretty good about it when i said i had a bit to do before registering it again

Can you use your t-stat housing or do you need to re-configure your radiator? Looks like the 14BT is opposite the 3B...as well as 3-times as tall, why is it so tall?

Is the power steering pump internal and that is just a reservoir mounted on the block? Will you put your AC compressor in the same location as on your 3B, or up where your PS pump was?

3b thermos and radiator will work fine. Ac will bolt to the same place I just had to pull the pulley off the 3b which was an absolute pain in the but. Need a four foot breaker bar to get the crank bolt undone.

The engine isn't much taller when you have them side by side it must just look heaps taller but together there's nothing in it. All in all the thing looks to just bolt straight uP as soon as the ribs are grinded off the bellhousing

Nice cant wait to see your progress with the engine install take plenty off pics for us diehard cruiser lovers. :)

I was referring to the size of the t-stat housing, not the engine. And the power steering pump? Is it gear driven and not pulley driven?

Yep the thermo housing is heaps bigger. Don't know why. The guy helping me is a Toyota mechanic of 40 years and he saids it's not an issue. Others have have done it without an issue to. Yep ps is internal gear driven by the looks

Any updates? I picked up a 14BT and am just starting to figure out what I need to source/modify. Wondering about the throttle linkage and if the power steering reservoir on the 14BT will fit. Looks like it may interfere with the brake booster.

What are you dropping it into? Mines sitting in the engine bay still on a crane as I jiggle things around and just start bit by bit connecting things up before I bolt everything up tight. I have only ran into the issue with the sump pan so far which we just cutting off one of the wings which has been done in other threads before.

1990 BJ75 w/ 3BII. I need to pull the sump and cut the wing off too. I'm going to try to order a 13BT t-stat housing and a few other hoses, just want to try and get everything I need ordered before I pull my engine.

It can take several weeks to get some of these parts here and I'd like to not have the 75 down for too long.

Ah ok. Should be fine with though it's close to the brake booster but clears it. I'm just getting the radiator hoses all sorted at the moment waiting for them to arrive. Parts are usually pretty quick to get here if still available out of Japan. And eBay has a lot of genuine and aftermarket available for 13b 13bt etc

Thanks for the response. Also wondering if the power steering pump and water pump suction will clear the bj75 frame. It looks like it will be very close.

Got any photos?

i'll get some for you. i'm sure the 75 and 73 are the same frame and basic setup so shouldn't be a problem. i haven't read any where else and have done heaps of research before i even started to make sure things were as straight forward as possible.
the cars at at a mates workshop and hes helping me in the night as he was a Toyota technician but has his own bossiness now. i rang him before i posted back to you and he said it will be fine bud

Thanks again. I started my own thread to document my project.

sweet we will tick tack i'm sure there's things we will both run into!!!!!
