I'm looking at new tyres to replace my 31/10.5R15. Whatever I get I'll be replacing the rims because I can't use my "high lift jack buddy" with my current rims and I want something than I can use it with.

Looking for something tall & skinny for increased clearance and keeping economy as good as possible. Will be an AT of some kind.

33/10.5R15 - Pros - lightest, 15" rims are cheaper, 15" BFGs are cheaper than 16", load rating is more than enough for my truck. Cons - only BFG in this size available in NZ

255/85R16 - Pros - tallest & skinniest. A few more choices for tyre - Cooper etc. Cons - Heavier, cost more.

285/75R16 - Pros - lots of choice in this size, taller than 33/10.5R15. Cons - heaviest, widest

The logical option really seems to be a 33/10.5R15 if I go with a BFG K02, or a 285/R16 if I decide to go with something else (like Kumho MT51).

Thoughts?

i'm building a jeep Cherokee for my father 33x10.50r15 KO2's are being purchased this fall for it. the cost and weight was deciding factor. if more aggressive is needed KM2 same size

255/85/16's are nice. cooper makes em, might be able to find a pair of goodyears wranglers...

On my ex-BJ70, with H55 and 3.70 axle (as should be your), I found the best size is the 31. In fact, I used to have 265/75R16 for several thousand of Km and it was, just OK, more precisely on the power and torque side. Then I switch to 31-10.5R15 and, even if it is +/- 1 inch less, make a big improvement on the driving agreeability. I notice a gain of power… and pleasure.

So my recommendation is to stay (in a 3B – H55 – 3.70 configurations) under 32. I’ll say, 235/85R16 can be a good compromise between all the sizes you propose. 255 or 33 will be a shame on hill climbing and 285 will be worst.

I have 4;11 diffs

Well ... that make a huge difference. Then, go with the 255 or 33. I hade 255 on my BJ42 (3B - H55 - 4.11) and that was a great combo !

255/85R16 is one of the best sizes at all in my opinion. Unfortunately not very popular here in NZ. Very popular in Europe....I run the S/T Maxx Coopers in that size on my 60 series mounted on the original 6" steel rims.
3.70 diffs / H55F not a problem with the happy pulling 12ht. 2000 rpm@ 100 km/h.
Probably the only AT in that size.

What is @beno running on the stock rims of his BJ73?

I have 2 sets of rims:

70 series 16" steelies: Toyo M55's in a 255/85/16 flavor (I run these with and without spacers):

And 80 series 16x8 steelies with Toyo MT 285/75/16's (with 1.5" spacers):
