I posted on this last week in the chit chat section, before noting that this is probably the best place to do so. There's an '86 BJ70 unofficially for sale here in Juneau, Ak for 10K. The owner is moving to Colorado and apparently isn't sure he can afford to keep his rig. It's got approx 300KM. Owner says previous owner spent a bunch on engine work about 150KM ago, although I haven't looked at the receipts. It runs very well. PTO winch is missing one u-joint (?) on the un-installed shaft but is otherwise ready to go. Needs new tires and tailpipe, seats could use reupholstering. A few rust bubbles on one front fender and one rear, otherwise rust free. Clear US title. Frame looks very good with undercoating. Naturally I'm interested, but don't really have the cash. My questions are: Do you think it's worth the price, and is there anyone else interested?

10k is a little high, I'd say. While looking for my BJ42 I kept my eye on the 70s as well, and they were all consistently below 10k US in Canada with fewer miles etc., though the body on this one sounds great. I'd either talk him down or check out the Canada classifieds and import one.

more information for you...

I have been buying up 70 series cruisers in the us for the last few years and the price sounds about right depending on the condition. I recently bought a very good condition 86' Bj70 for 11k had 200k on it and new head on engine. If this one has good body could be worth the price, if you are going to pass I might be intersted. Keep in mind that the canadian ones will be cheaper but getting the title will cost a little more, and depending on how you get it onto American soil you might have to spend $$ on import fees. Just my 2 cents. Let me know if you are going to pass on it, then I might be interested, however I you are going to go for it, I will stay away unless you want more advise :D.

Good Luck,

Michael

Michael,
Sad to say that I'll be passing on it. The timing of it all, and my finances, just aren't right. Not only would it break me to buy it, my family, friends and neighbors would probably ostracize me if I picked up a third cruiser. I don't really have time to sell my 40 in order to come up with some cash, and am not sure I really want to go that way. Anyway, he's out of town for a couple of days. Would you suggest that I give him your e-mail addy? His tentative plan is to leave town around the third week in January, so perhaps you could meet him in Washington or Colorado rather than coming to Alaska. It occured to me that one dishonest way of importing one of these vehicles would be to take the AK license plates off my FJ40, put them on the BJ in Canada and drive through customs with the 40 registration. Of course, I would never do that, but... Bret

thanks for the information

Brett,

Sure give him my email address, I thought it was arkansas not alaska but still I am always looking at titled Diesel cruisers in the US. Just and FYI when homeland security combined Border patrol with US customs thing got better and worse, as far as border crossing with the wrong tags on a ride that would be a much high risk for someone now a days than before, but of course we don't know anyone that would do that, and I really would not know anything about the reality of it...ok ;)

Thanks,

Michael

Hey, anyone want to talk me into, or out of , buying this one? My family is OK with it, and the heck with the neighbors. If it wasn't for you fawkers, I wouldn't even be considering it. Seriously, I think you all are great. Bret
