I have two spare 9 1/2" full floating axle third members (both from front diffs) and wanted to verify some information.

If front diffs are all a full floating design, does that mean the thirds won't fit in a rear semi floater? Mine are 4 pinion but still have windows open to the center. Will they accommodate the installation of c-clips? Are their any 2 pinion fronts/full floats?

And just to verify for anybody else searching this thread: A third out of a semi float will work in a full float axle. Correct?

The gear sets that have 4 spider gears will not fit into C-clip rear axles. There is a spacer block that needs to go into the diff to hold the axle shafts into place so the clips stay in position that does not fit into a 4 spider diff.

A semi-float diff will fit into the front or back axle housing of any Land Cruiser with the same size differentials (and meeting other relevant conditions like axle shaft splines - depending on vintage). The 4 spider gear design is less common than the 2 spider gear design.

hummm, interesting, i never saw a 4 pinion front center unit before...

Not unless someone put an LSD in the front. Those are a bolt together carrier that have 4 spider gears.

I haven't seen any 4 spider open diffs in LCs, though they do exist. I just normally deal with older units.

exactly, i have worked on the LSD and they are 4 pinion but i am trying to get my head around how a open diffed 3 pinion would work...
you need 2 cross shafts...
someone take a pic and post it up so i can see this in real time...

Thanks guys, that clears things up a bit. I just pulled the one front diff is out of my 89 jdm bj74 with axle code K085. It turns out it had a 2 pinion open front and a 4 pinion rear limited slip. Not sure what I was thinking earlier. Clearly the axle code on the ID plate only refers to the rear.

The other front third is coming out of a Canadian BJ70 axle. So I assume it will be the same, no? (other then gear ratio)

So the question is will either of these "2 Pinion" units work in a rear semi float

2 pinion will work front or rear. like John mentioned you will need the black Cclip retainer block for the semi floater.

we all learn as we move ahead.

as you know the ratios will be different unless someone swapped to 4.11 in the CDM 70... unless you know the history i would double check to be safe. i have bought stock looking trucks and found the diff center units had been changed out.
