1981 model year, 230,000kms, aluminum tub, original wheels and caps included, originally mustard yellow

i have noticed the value of the BJ42s have dropped considerably in the last 2 years.
i would guess about $10,000.

the 83-84 BJ42 is still in high demande so they fetch a really good dollar esp since they can be sold to the states.

if that was a gasser then i would guess about $5000, they have gone through the floor. decent running gassers with rust can be bought for $1500 or less now.

sorry for the bad news,
cheers

There's a mish mash of things going on there. Looks like an Aqualu tub, rear gate/hatch is from older J4x or is aftermarket, turn signals are the older style, dash is older style too (?, not like my '83), noticeable patches in the lower part of the cowl, where the fender and running boards meet--standard rust spot so check underneath/inside/floor, bib looks aftermarket/Aqualu, rust on roll bar mounts just painted over with rust bullet (?), aftermarket extended shackles, aftermarket wider wheels. But yeah looks clean.

Are you buying? Check frame for rust/rust repair/repaint. See if you can get pics on that resto and any receipts.

I would say less than $10k CAD because of the aftermarket products etc. But looks nice. Then again, so did that $10k Ontario truck. Read that thread--I learned a lot from it.

I think you folks are pretty close to the mark...to the low side, though hard to tell till you see up close and get the full story. Was the frame treated in any way, was the firewall removed, or was it a simple cut tub, install of the tub. How is the fit and finish? What mechanically has been done to the drivetrain, steering linkages, suspension. That all plays a factor. 1981 is the most common year, and that looks to me to be a 1981 firewall. Crushers is right in that the 83/84 will hold more value due to the 5spd and ps, and rarity. The rear fold down looks like an Aqualu gate, as does the lift top. I have seen the value of the gassers head down, but I have not seen a similar decline in the diesel 40 series here.

Just thinking about this truck on the drive into Richmond this morning. Tough call without seeing it in person. Are the firewall body mounts okay? Someone put some time and money into it, and a lot has been done for any future owner. How deep is the question.

At the end of the day it will be worth what the buyer and seller decide is fair value...

seller's asking price is $9500 but has stated that he is very open to offers. it's a 7 hour drive from me though so i'm not sure how badly i want a diesel. what kind of MPG do they get around the city anyways?

Reasonable unless there is something hidden.

Not in the Lower Mainland then if a 7 hour drive. Explains the lower price...

Low to mid 20's if you have any reasonable sized tires on, and depending on pump and injector condition.

I am not partial to the color, but then to each his own...
