A quick question about my 5spd. Does anyone know how many miles the main transmission bearings are good for. I mean the upper and lower input shaft bearings and output bearings? My roller ball bearings look mint and and don't look like they need replacing and also toyota wants around 600.00 for them. Any suggestions?

So I just got a message from Fabien, He confirmed that I am the first tub he will be exporting to North America. I'm actually super stoked about that because it will add value. He told me it will be ready in September and then it will be shipped to Vancouver. Man I can not wait, that tub is such a huge piece of the rebuild puzzle. I looked at so many vendors offering tubs and what not I was getting dizzy. I know there are probably some good builders out there but nothing comes close to what he is offering with regards to quality. If this wasn't my dad's old cruiser there would be no way that I would have taken this project on rare cruiser or not. The shear amount of man hours and the buckets of cash I have invested makes me weak in the knees but it's a new year and I can always make more money tomorrow.

Hi Mr Cresent Wrench.
My thoughts exactly!
It's only money a renewable resource.
AND tomorrow you can go back to work and make some more.
My expenses have now slowed as I almost have all the parts needed to finish. The exhaust is my next buy then it's time to start the motor for the first time.
Keep up the good work and the photos.
Cheers Peter

Hi there BG, I'm going to make my own stainless exhaust coming out the RH side in front of the rear tire. My tub has a storage box so I have to relocate the exhaust anyway. But that is a few moons away from now.

Wow- awesome choice of tub! I was eyeing those up a while ago. Nice job on the build thus far, would love to see it in person some day!

Vanisle, for sure anytime you are in Parksville, PM me and I'll give you my cell #. The tub should be here by the end of September or early October. I should have the transmission and engine back in by then and the brakes plumbed. I'm waiting on a mud member to PM me about some doors, I hope I can get them because it would save me a lot of grief.

I am 95% done the transmission/transfercase rebuild. I had all the gears in place and was applying sealer to the TC cover when I moved some things on my work bench and found a little plastic spout. It took me a second to realize that this plastic fitting fits on the other side of the TC cover and directs oil into the end of the lower transmission shaft. I wonder how long it would have lasted without this little plastic fitting?
I ran out of time tonight and I'm off to work tomorrow, so when I'm home I will finish primering the assembly and give it a few coats of paint to detail it a bit. Then it's on to finish plumbing the brakes and fuel lines and make room in the garage to start rebuilding the 3B.

Just some quick picks of the transfercase gearing. Cleaning the old aluminum transfer case was quite difficult, the old mud and dirt didn't want to let go so I used various small wire wheels to remove 30 years of grime. I will be home in 2 days so I will re coat the whole assembly with a stronger primer and paint it.

I have finally finished the transmission/transfercase assembly, and that took way too long to finish!
I replaced all the main drive bearings and all the seals and rubber boots. I primered the whole unit with 2 coats of etching primer and gave her 3 coats of anti rust paint. Now I have to find two friends that will help me pack it back into the frame.

When she is back in place I will remove the shifter again and have it powder coated, it will hold up better than paint.

very nice job!! Inspiration indeed...
Question for you, the transfer case shifter, when disconnecting the lever and linkage is there any "home" position it should be in or critical markings that should be done for alignment when reinstalling or does it only go back on with just one clocking option?

Good question, mine is a 5spd. So there is a selector shaft that has to be disengaged or she won't shift through the gears, I put all the forks in their neutral position. I was a little freaked out about the length of time I had it apart while waiting for toyota to bring in a few $130.00 bearings for me plus all the seals and boots but I found the more I handled it the easier it became and now could zip through one in a fraction of the time. Back to your question when I had mine all painted up I installed the 5spd. Shifter and it wouldn't shift and I almost fainted but then I realized that the 5th gear rod was engaged, so once I hooked up that linkage everything lined up and played well with each other. She shifts very nice, I was so happy that I didn't have to pull it apart again. JD take lots of pictures and pre order your gasket kit and seals then you will only have to wait for worn out bearings if you find any. Use lubriplate to assemble the forks and bushings as this will help prevent wear until the oil arrives during your initial run up. Cheers

JD just read your question again, if you don't change the length of the rod and take the transfercase apart in 2H then it will go back together easily. Like I said take lots of pictures, if you run into a problem PM me
Cheers

Does Fabian send you any updates as the tub build progresses? I'm gearing up to order a tub from him and wondered how your experience has been so far.

Rustin, nothing so far, I asked him for picture updates and he said that would be no problem but that's the last I heard. Otherwise I would have posted them. I am due to bug him again so i will keep you posted.

On another note, my parents are retired and live in Panama. I have put them on a quest for replacement doors for me. I am looking for new doors, ambulance doors and a windshield frame in very good condition which my dad believes he has found. I need the mud members expert advice to verify the years that fit "Exactly. My cruiser is a 1983 bj42 I believe the 75-84 doors are all the same, but wasn't there a year where the ambulance doors were slightly different? My ambulance doors have one corner on the bottom hinge side that is slightly rounded. And as for windshield frames I think that 79-84 are all the same, can anyone verify this please. Secondly I have to figure out how to get them shipped to the island in BC at a reasonable cost. Thanks
