Did a search and came up empty handed, could you give me some expert or otherwise advice.

Seems my little BJ42 is being somewhat troublesome on starts, the light for the glow plugs is on for the correct amount of time but the solenoid does a click click.

I measured the amount of time the super glow is on and its quick, seems the water sensors are OK, could be the timer?

Thanks

Rob

I had a problem similar to that, i just routed the glow plugs to a manual switch, makes it easier to start in the colder weather too.

Regards

I had a similar problem on my BJ42. I took the starter/glow selenoid apart(under passenger side dash), and found s*** on the contacts, so I cleaned them up, and haven't had problems since, Knock, knock. (thats me knocking on wood!)
Cheers,
Deny

I think I tried that alread, your speaking of the timer?

Rob

I thought there was no timer in BJ42's, course if yours is an 83 or newer, could be different than my 81. But I was talking about the large switchy thingy, that when you press the little glow switch on the dash, it clicks the large wires together to run power to the glowplugs and indicator glower. I think it's the Starter Selenoid? its the big black box that clicks when you press the glowplug switch.
Cheers,
Deny (I'm not down with all the lingo, just trying to help)

Ya its one of those 1984 models with all the stuff to go wrong. I sure liked the 1981 version, just throw in a five speed and power steering and your good to go.

Thanks

If its 84, then it might be a superglow?

Like many I went the manual way. here is how I did it.

see post 22 for the info.

Its From Greg_B

works great that way. Yup my BJ was hard to start and smoked lots. Went manual and glow for about 20 seconds first start. Smooth and no smoke, If it gets slightly rough I push in the button while it is running, smooth again. then its good to go.

I think the timers are crappola. The wiring change didn't take long.

If your customer wants to go manual. I think you could go to a electronic store and buy a cheap ajustable time and go with a preset 20 seconds, hot or cold. one relay. no afterglow. that would suffice if needed. But if it was non island cold then you might have to double cycle the glow plugs on real winter mornings, non island of course.
