My fuel tank was wet so I dropped it to take to a rad shop but it is totally rusted out--I can poke my finger through several spots. I need to get a new one or good used one ASAP. Are these tanks the same as the gasser tanks? If so, what years will fit? Any aftermarket tanks? Thanks, B

gasser and diesel are the same part number and i have one here in great shape but since i do not ship it won't do you any good, i guess...
cheers

Both have the same part number however the drain plug on the diesel is in a different position so you will need to cut another hole in the skidplate to still utilize the drain plug.

Keep in mind that this is what I found when I bought a new tank for my 84' BJ42. It is a toyota tank and was the same number for both.

I'm surprised to hear this. Where is the fuel return? I can't remember but the gasser tank was perfect for the 13BT conversion. I thought the return went into the tank but maybe it was to a cover somewhere.

Tanks may be the same between fuels but I'm pretty sure they changed from year to year to accomidate the five speed.

Yes, change up from inside to underslung (EDIT---for the 4* series,, then there is a change of part number 82/10 to 1986 which would seem to be the change to accomodate the 5spd. Pick-up tubes all sub up from 79 right through to 86, for both the single and double tube so they don't care about the tank change in 1982---END EDIT).

The fuel pick-up tube that screws into the top of the tank will be the defining difference. The 60 series are all be the same tank. The pick-up tube is all that is different. 40 series, same thing.

Gassers have the return line beside the pickup line, in the same screw in cap, as does the HJ61 and BJ74.

Here's some pictures of a tank from a 09/1980 BJ-42 to compare with yours.

ie. location of the fuel return, location of the drain on tank and matching hole on the skid-plate.

Was there a change in the fuel-tanks to match the H55-F in 1983? I know the fuel tank went under the body in ~79 when Toyota scrapped the stepped rear floor and went to the level floor, but did it also get shifted rearward from '82 to '83 to accomodate the longer tranny?

On my diesel tank (BJ42), the metal cap that attaches to the top of the tank with screws and has the electrical plug for the fuel level) actually has 'FJ40' stamped into it.

Hi Steve.

The sending units are generic too. I just put a tank from an HJ61 under my BJ60. Single tube pickup (ordered new from Toyota) is all I changed.

Ohh, and nice clean job. Is that POR?

Greg,
(slight hijack)
the tank got scraped (IH8UNDERCOATING), wire-wheeled, sanded, Rustmort'd, self-etching primer, then three coats of ZeroRust. If done over, I'd pass on the ZeroRust. I wasn't very impressed with how long it took to harden (the POR-15 on my frame was harder in 4 hours than the ZeroRust after a few months), and still never approached POR for durability. Oh well, chalk this one up for experience.

Next time:
I'd be interested to try the POR Metal Prep to compare with the RustMort. I'd use POR again (very worthwhile even considering the price difference between tremclad, etc), but would also like to try RustBullet (looks worthy of a test).

Norcal, I'm still jealeous of your '83 (the last two years of production got all the goodies!). Once you get the tank issue fixed, it'll be play-time again.

Cheers,
Steve

Well, I'm jealous of your tank. I got the tank off the 1980 FJ parts truck I found here locally (in way better shape). Since mine is a DD, I didn't have time to paint it etc. just flushed and reinstalled and it's fine. Thanks for all the pics and info on this one. Thank god the gasser tank is the same or I was gonna have to bend over for 4WheelAuto or something to ship a BJ tank down here.

PS I've lost my goddam internet connection so if I'm not bugging all ya's enough you know why.

Thanks again,
It's  time.
