on the transfer there's a screw that holds a plate to keep the center piece from spinning. i was taking that screw off to seal an oil leak and it sheared. i drove to get a screw extractor and pulled out the broken screw but now the center piece is oriented differently so i can't fit the plate back in. what's the right way to rotate that center piece back into place?!

The shaft should have threads....thread a metric bolt in and tighten so you can spin the idler shaft. You'll simultaneously need to pull the shaft out a bit which can get dicey, so be very very careful not to pull the shaft out too much as the shims/washers inside the case will likely fall out.

That said I'd make sure you jack the truck up completely and put trans/tcase in neutral to get as much free-play as possible.

Never had this issue and do not remember this shaft being threaded. Instead of bottoming out a bolt would have a nut on the bolt. Almost bottom out the bolt. Leave a little thread left to the end. Then tighten the nut against the shaft. You should be able to use the bolt head to spin the shaft. If for some reason it snaps the broken of piece should come out easily.

I would highly recommend not driving without the plate locking the shaft in plate. A bigger worry than the shaft spinning is having it walk out either end. That happens a good chance the idler gear and gears on both sides of it getting destroyed.
