Did you swap to a nine tooth starter gear?

(a gear (9 tooth) has to also be swapped over when you have a non gear reduction starters

It’s likely the starter gear is not engaging with the flywheel properly. the flywheel has a different tooth pattern between the non gear reduction early starter and the gear reduction middle also unavailable starter. The gear you need and info the make your new starter work be found in this thread.

Hey @stevebradford, we did not, but after removing the starter it looks like you're exactly right. Though we took it to a starter guy this morning who said he needed an additional part(s) to swap the 9 gear with the 11....I haven't dug through that forum link you sent me but I will later today and hopefully it will shed some light...thanks

I have a 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 with a 3.0-liter diesel inline-four engine (imported to the US). When trying to start it, I initially heard quick clicks but now it's completely silent. I'm thinking it may be a starter issue?

I've attached a photo of the starter -- where's the best place to find a replacement part?
