I did the Birfield Repack this weekend (with a VERY SPECIAL thanks to CDan - who, after NUMEROUS phone calls walked me through it).

Anyway, I expected to use a lot more grease than I did. I really wanted to keep things as clean as possible and after I was done I noticed that I only used about 1 tube of grease in each joint. I packed it well into the joint and placed a pretty good amount in the round joint that surrounds the birfield. I repacked the trunion and wheel bearings.

I also used 1 gallon (4 quarts) of gear oil in the pumpkin.

Does that sound about right? Or should I rip it apart and add more grease to the inner joint?

You're supposed to fill the knuckle cavity 3/4 full IIRC.

IIRC, I used about 3 1/2 tubes total for the knuckles and less than 1 tub for the wheel and trunion bearings. Like Dan said, about 3/4 full on the knuckle housing.

I think that might be a bit too much...IIRC about 3.0 quarts (I think a little less--2.8-2.9 quarts--No FSM in front of me).

The way I gauge it is to keep putting in until it starts to come out just a few drops at a time. If you put your finger it, it should be just near the top (again, IIRC).

The knuckle is what everone else is saying--about 3/4 full.

Best.

2 tubes per side on the moly grease, start the tear down.

Assuming he packed the actual birf joint full..... couldnt he just add grease through the fill hole on top of the knuckle?

I'm not sure I understand the purpose of all the grease in the knuckle cavity.

I completely packed the joint, but I did not fill the cavity that much as I figured it would eventually spill out the bottom and ruin the felt seals I just installed.

I don't see Dan saying anything (yet) :flipoff2:

Whoops... cruiserdan not exactly the cruiserman is he... or is he???

Land Bruiser,

Don't out think yourself. If you've got everything in right (mainly inner axle seal) you should little to no grease getting past the wiper seal. That's what they're there for. I can run my finger across the ball, and there's very little grease that gets by the felt.

As mentioned, if you completely packed the birf., you should be able to just add more grease at the plug hole. Keep in mind, those innards (sp?) spin around very fast and you want that extra grease in there. Alot of heat build up there, plus I would think you'd want the confinement of the grease around the birf, otherwise it would just sling out and possibly dry up the birf. Just don't overfill it, or grease will end up pushing through the axle seal.., and then comes the soup like me :D. No soup for you! NEXT!

WTF is this???

Land Bruiser-

Remove the pipe plug on the top of the knuckle, turn the wheel so that the opening of the hole is over the open area over the axle shaft inside the knuckle, and pump grease(molybdenum disulfide only) into the knuckle. You will be fine.

Good luck!
