Birfield help

I was hoping someone might be able to give a little advice on whether I can clean up this Birfield and knuckle or is it more serious and need replacing.

What do you planing on doing with your rig....how big of tires?

Its a DD nothing too serious - running 31's stock 15 rims with Yoko Geo A/T. Built for rock crawling.

Thanks for your input, pulling the knuckle off and looks like I have a full day of cleaning and buffing.

As long as the birfs was not clicking them slap them back in......if you are doing some pretty hard core stuff and increasing tire size like up to 35 inch or so.....then go longfields.

now that i have the knuckle off, the ball that sits in the knuckle is pitted and rusted too.

1) Why did this happen on one side and not the other
2) Can it still be used?

No worries...... clean everything up.

Replace the inner axle seals with ones from Marlin.....best insurance.

Repack everything in grease.

If you in that far I would replace the trunion bearings & wheel bearings while there. Just get a knuckle kit with all seals & gaskets.

The rust in moisture getting into the knuckle in the past.

I have got the knuckle kit from 4Wheel with every bearing and seal I should need. The king pin bearings (trunion bearng?) where shot to hell, rusted and broken. I think there has been water getting in the back side for some time. I just bought this cruiser last spring.

This all started with the outer wheel bearing going, so I also have the kit for all bearings races and seals.

Is there anything that I can treat/add to the knuckle to help prevent more water getting in? or is it just up to regular greasing.

The inner axle seal...... one in the middle of the picture.

Basically it provides a better seal keeping grease from the axle from getting into the birfield area.

Kingpin=trunion----yeap!

Since you just got the rig, probably the wiper seals (inside rubber seals) have been worn for a long time.

As far as keeping water out just pay attention to rebuilding it with new seals & gaskets, also you should take some emory cloth (fine sand paper) and clean up the axle shaft when the inner seal rest.

Good luck & keep asking any unclear questions.......soon you will be rebuilding these while on the trails.......... don't ask how you learn that

unfortunatly I will have to go with the basic axle seal as i would like to get this back together and since i have one here - should work for now.

Good luck on the rebuild......after you do it a couple of times, it becomes cake.
