Is there any type of tool or special technique for getting those snap rings on the end of the axle into the birfield?

Using a screwdriver to try and press that thing into the axle groove so it will fit into the birfield has been rather frustrating so far.

Somehow I did it a few years ago the last time I had to replace a birfield, but I tried it last night to no avail...PIA

Zip tie the snap ring tight, tap in axle shaft with brass hammer......allll done.

uhhh...lock ring pliers? That's what I used just recently when i did my knuckles. worked perfectly.....I had to go to a bolt supply place to get the right bolt to pull the pirf out enough to expose the ring groove though.....got the pliers at sears...

EDIT: just realized you were talking abou the other end of the Birf....oops!

I really dont get the hoopla about those rings. I was fully prepared for it to be a total bear but it was a cinch. I just put the birf in a vice with the star facing up, put the inner with the clip in it in so that the open side of the clip was facing me, pushed the back of the clip in, then used a screwdriver to push each end in, then tapped the inner with my hand to drive it in. The first one took 5 minutes, the second about 30 seconds.

Exactly what I do.

Martacking

I welded a little stop on the spline and got away from them.

I've heard about doing this- I think it's refered to as Martacking. Is there any possible problems with doing this. I understand if it is not tacked in the correct place the axle shaft can float too much, but if done correctly any problems?

I heard MarkW say he had seem a few problems with it. That and the c-clips are cheap and easy to install so why bother.

Thanks Al, I guess I will learn to make peace with the c-clips and learn the tricks to dealing with them.
