In my quest to make early bib lights into turn signals on my rig I guess first I should ask if this is possible. On early 40's are the small orange lights in the bib marker/ running lights or turn signals? I wanted to use as turn signals for I removed my fender mounted turn signals in hopes of using just the bib lights as such mounted in my bumper? the bulbs in them are dual element and they have two wires coming out of each?

Someone else can correct if I'm wrong, but one dual element light can be used like any other dual element light. I mean, it's just a light, right?

Use your side marker lights as marker lights, and your dual element bib lights as turn signals... why not?

The lights are grounded when installed in the bumper, and you have a wire to control each filament. Wire the "dim" filament to the running lights (same as the markers) and the "bright" filament into your turn signal switch... no reason I can see why it wouldn't work.

What year 40 do you have?

Take a 12V hot wire (direct hot, not through the turn switch) and with the lights installed in the bumper, put the hot to each of your two wires. If you truly have a combination light, each filament should illuminate when you put 12V to its respective wire.

Verify they can be used as combination and then we can fix the other issues.

I plan on doing this to, just not to that stage yet. The side marker have single filament bulbs and don't think a standard dual would fit in the housing. I planned on finding one that would or modifying the housing.

Did you check FAQS?

Here is a link I saved along time ago when I get to this stage.

I think you will find that one of those wires is a ground and the other is one of the two elements for the lamp. The FJ25 used these lights for both front and rear lights. Just different color lenses and connection on the end of the wires. Tail lights had a plug while the bib had a connection that went in a screw terminal. The 61 FJ40 still had the three wire on the bib light but only one element was used. Tail lights were used until 64 when the lens got larger. Because Toyot never changed the design of the front bib just dropped the second element wire it's pretty simple to just solder the second wire in. A few thread on doing it over the years here on Mud.

I used the fun with 40 parts link to do this on my 73'40. Ordered the stock bib lights from CCOT and installed a second wire in the unused socket port. Used the gasket as a template, closed my eyes crossed my fingers and made a hole with the ole hole saw. Started undersized and gradually opened it up with a rotary file until they fit. Pretty simple really, just wire one running light, one turn signal light and ground to the housing with mounting stud.

POTATO LAUNCHER Looks good, I want to do the same for my 71 but I think I'll try to find an older bib with the holes already there.

Thanks, I was going to source an earlier bib but got impatient.

Dual element bulbs are usually for brake and blinker. The parking light circuit feeds through the blinker switch and the circuit controls one bulb. Your two wires are pos and neg from the bulb. Measure the resistance. A little bulb will be around 24 ohms.

The shared higher wattage element the you solder the wire for is brake/turn signal. Theother low wattage would be tail lights. On the FJ25 the higher wattage was turn signal the lower was parking lights. Since the bib light was for a parking light the lower wattage was the one wired. I think the wattage was around 8/25 watts.

Yes, it was wired by the factory for just the running light feature. New wire will activate the flasher circuit.
They were delivered as Toyota Original Parts with the 1157 style bulb installed.

I did this to my 1970 (7/69) about 15 years ago. Works great. I removed the turn signals from the fenders and moved the wiring to the pre-existing lights (that were wired for driving lights). It's worked great ever since. (yes, I had to utilize the right lightbulb housings). My only concern has been that since I have a winch and off-road lights in front of the assembly, are they truly visible.
