Anyone around the area (RTP) want to ride mountain bikes after work at Umstead or other local trails? Or on the weekend. I finally found a bike and I am getting back at it.

Not mountain biking, but I just bought my first bicycle in probably 16 years. First day of bicycle work commuting was yesterday!

That is awesome. I would love to bike to work. What did you get and how far is your commute?

I usually just ride the gravel at Umstead and do crabtree creek trails. About 1.5 hours / 12 or so miles.

Picked up one of these off Craigslist for $170, bought new last April. Guy gave me original receipts and manuals:

Diamondback 2017 Haanjo Metro

My commute is 3.5-4 miles depending on the building I'm going to. Enough to get a decent sweat on, but not so far that I'm dead all day. Bummed today because of rain, had to take the truck. Takes about 20 minutes, only 2x what my driving time is!

Very cool!

My bike came from craigs as well. Great prices and selection. ;<)

I mountain bike, much in the same way I Kayak - slowly, leisurely, and not often enough.

If work didn't get in the way so much I would love to mountain bike. Leisure activities like biking, going to the gym, having lunch, and using the bathroom are frowned upon during work hours.

Andrew I was almost going to start the same thread! I'd love to hit Umstead or similar on the weekends. I'm trying to do the Neuse River trail after work at least 3 days a week.

After 6 months of biking 18 miles a day, my body and mind is missing it!
I have another 20lbs I'd LOVE to lose...

I'm calling Mr. Ramon out, because he WANTS to go, but doesn't think he can hang. I don't think it'll be a problem, we'll treat it as any other trail ride, and watch everyone's back!

He can definitely hang. I am not fast, I just like to go. :<)

We would have a blast. Gravel and trails or gravel only, whatever is fine with me. Across umstead and back is about 10 miles of gravel. Crabtree creek is about 6 miles of actual trails that are tame to moderate. Nothing crazy.

What type of biking are we talking about her? For me, I ride gnarly singletrack on a singlespeed rigid 29'er, no suspension and one gear. I've actually ridden the Uwharrie mtb trails with this combination. Umstead is good exercise, but with one gear and not a lot of variety I get bored quickly.

I am open to whatever. I just need to get a lot more miles in and I don't ride on the road because of the crazy drivers. I do prefer fast single track. 1x11 full suspension xc machine for me.

The local trails around Raleigh are pretty tame (or I have not found the gnarly ones yet, still looking. ;<)

The 14 mile single track was fun at 286 (Umstead) before the airport shut it down. It was fast and flowed well. I have ridden rocky road, harris lake, centennial campus before it was a golf course, and Tsali for the xTerra sprint tri race.

I would like to go over to Chapel Hill and ride the trails at Uwharrie or near Uwharrie as well.

We need to meet up and ride and then go have a beverage and talk about how slow we are. ;<)

It's been a while since I hit 286 or RR. RR was a beast back in the day. 286 kept getting longer and longer. I remember when it was only 6 miles.

I had many wrecks on the climbs at RR.

I started mountain biking in the area in 1996. There were hardly any trails. I then got married and had children and started mountain biking again in 2011. I then took another break to go back to school for 2 years and now I am back again.

I started in 1994 primarily riding NCSU and centennial. I had an awful GT Talera and I explored a lot with it. After school, it was stored and collected dust. 10 years later I wanted to get back in to biking and purchased a Gary Fisher Cake 3 full suspension bike December of 2004. It was a horrific bike and a year later I sold it to some unlucky guy and purchased a 2005 Specialized Stumpjumper. The Stumpy was billed as a full-suspension XC bike but I quickly built it into a short travel enduro style monster and rode the hell out of it. In September of 2010, I bought a very used Surly Karate Monkey single speed rigid just to have a neighborhood bike. I rode it everywhere from Umstead to singletrack and loved it. The Monkey was bloody simple and just worked. The Stumpjumper hadn't been touched for months and I finally just sold it. Several years later and commited to rigid singlespeed, I purchased a used 2013 Kona Unit and parted out the Karate Monkey. The Unit has the perfect blend of XC and aggressive hardtail. It does everything better than the Karate Monkey and has some very nice bits on it.

Just a couple of years ago when I was in better shape and riding regularly, I was dusting everyone on the trails no matter what bike they had. Now I'm lucky to even keep up with the beginners. I still have some skills, just not the stamina.

If you guys make it down to Uwharrie anytime soon let me know, its some of my favorite riding in the area. Not exacly a gazelle going up hill, but I am always up for a ride.

Sweet bike. How do you like the Stan's rims?

They are the 32h and I love them. The bike hasnt held up real well but the wheels have. I am a big guy and I'm pretty hard on bikes. This is my 3rd set of Maxxis EXO's and Ive never had a bent rim, spoke, or flat.
