Simple question. For roaming about, and towing something the size of an adventure trailer, which engine would you prefer? A 22re or a 2b/3b/turboed variant etc? For the purposes of this discussion (I do realize that the engine is only one aspect of towing) ignor everything else such as wheelbase etc.

3b turbo. at low rpms the diesel will be much happier than the 22re.

Even though the 22RE has 30+ ft/lbs?

Driving both frequently, you will use the clutch MUCH more with the 22re. With a 3b you'll just idle over stuff and it will chug along. and with the turbo you'll be fine at higher speeds too.
just drive both and you'll see.

I have a turbo'd 3B in my FJ60 and it does OK on the road unless you are starting on a hill then you have to bury your foot to get going. Does great off road though, pretty much just idles over everything.
I have been thinking about the AT's and perhaps building my own trailer but would be concerned that the extra weight might be a little much for the little 3B.
Sure you would get there .... eventually, but it would be a PITA!
Given the choice, I would go with a 12HT or Cummins.
Only downside to the 12HT is parts availability on the road.
Both have more power, more options, and still diesel robustness and decent fuel economy.

This would be in a BJ44 so I'm guessing the 800lb weight drop would probably make a difference off the line.

I'd say your right! ;)

I see, so we are discussing the merits of an engine in order to select a platform- not an engine to put in a platform. In that case I agree with Jan. A turboed 3B is simple, reliable, fewer critical components, more suited to pull a small (light) trailer.

I think you'll be happier with the 3bT. You can tune it pretty simply by adding an intercooler and increasing boost/fuel just a little.

Depends on how much you anticipate being on the highway... where the 22r/e *might* do better. Not sure about that.

Just think, AVAILABILITY of Gas or Diesel I would pick 3B-T of course
