Tried to buy two local trucks here in Chicago last week (99 LX470; 2000 LC), but both failed the PPI after we got them up on the lift and saw the undercarriage rusted solid. So now I'm thinking fly and drive, or ship. Seems like most people on here would say Southwest or PNW is best, right? How about any of Kentucky, Kansas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma? Georgia, NC, SC? I know individual maintenance makes a big difference too, but just trying to narrow down my search a little.

The white ones....generally.

I’d say Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, And Idaho (all in the white zone) are iffy. Some are reasonable if they’ve been garaged and cleaned weekly or so, some still become terrible because of the salt on the roads during the winter. I’ll respect anyone that feels differently though.

Thanks, guys. That map generally matches what makes sense in my head. I can imagine salt being used on the roads of ski areas in Utah, Colorado, etc., but not sure.

Arkansas or Texas. I prefer to know a little about the previous owner but we dont have rusty cars down here.

Mine was from GA and literally the only rust is on one bolt that the AC drips down.

Make sure you check the history of the vehicle, just because you buy a hundy in a non-rust belt state doesn't mean it didn't come from the rust belt. There is a company in OKC that seems to sell mostly vehicles from out of state, many come from the Northeastern US.

I do feel a little guilty about bringing a clean truck into the salt belt (for winter driving, no less). Hopefully with some prior rust treatment, and during winter carwashes...I'll have a shot at keeping her clean?? :meh:

California, specifically Southern California. Literally, we only have one season here, and its a mix of spring/fall. Rain once or twice a year, and no snow unless you're living 4000 feet + in elevation.

I say buy one local, drive it and by the time it falls apart you'll be sick of it and looking for a new one anyway.

Agree with spike. And usually price is right on somewhat rusty rigs. There is so much rust fear on mud. It is like HIV in ‘93

Texas is a great place to look. Lots of big cities and nearly all vehicles are rust free.
