i just bought a denso rebuild from carquest for $220 plus a $40 core charge. i ordered it in the am and had it in my hands three hours later. cdan has it for about the same price but you'd have to pay shipping.
Had the alternator on my 62 rebuilt for $160, That was 4 years ago, still going strong, (i don't own it now). It's not rocket science, brushes, bearings, clean it up stick it back in.
I personally think the stock alternator is way small in terms of output. I've heard of people doing mods to them (rewinding), but to me it didn't make sense. Getting higher output from an alternator that isn't designed for it (in terms of heat) I think is asking for trouble.
So when I wanted a higher output alternator, I put in a 200 amp Leece Neville. And that is 200 real amps, unlike some of the other advertised high output alternators. These things are monsterous. I picked mine up for $150 rebuilt at an alternator shop. You can get these on ebay sometimes for even less.
I've run the thing for five years now without one minute of trouble. And I've got plenty of power for all the accessories I can find. One less thing to worry about.

I have replaced mine three times in the last year. I got mine from Oreilly's for 129. It's a POS, but does come with lifetime warranty. I just cant afford to buy OEM right noe. The one sold by Oreilly's has ND stamped on the housing. Is that diffrent than a Denso rebuild?
I had my stock alternator rebuilt and it lasted for 5+ years. When it finally was going bad, I replaced mine w/ another OEM alt. and it sadly went bad after roughly one year of service, after the warranty expired. It's a rare case but it happens. I then put in a 140amp Mean Green Alternator I bought from MAF about a year and a half ago. So far no problems and I love the output.
My alternator just recently went pretty bad too. Cheapest place i've found them is stock rebuilt for $180 at autozone with a $50 core charge. My GrandMa gave me $200 to get one but i'm just going to take that + my original $180 and get a mean green from http://www.cruisersolutions.com/
PS: instead of starting a new thread for this question i'll put it here. Should i replace the alternator belt along with it just because it will be off any way?
it looks like it bolts in no mods and comes with a new bracket. i could be wrong tho. i've not seen any mention of having to mod anything tho. mabey someone could verify that before i go and cause myself trouble

Depends on your budget, your time, and the condition of the belt. If the belt looks OK, and you check your rig from time to time, and you have more time than money, then reuse the belt. Mr T belts are pretty rugged. They usually don't just blow up w/out lots of warning - provided you are paying attention to the symptoms. I've done both, and it can make sense either way depending on the circumstances.
I have repalced 20+ 62 alternators with assorted remans and non have lasted morre than 2 years. Since I put a 2 year warrentee on crap it killed me. Buy OEM reman or Mean Green and save a bunch of time.
Yes, Mean Green for FJ62 bolts up exactly in place of stock. It comes with a nice pig tail to correct its back terminal for your wiring harness.
My previous alternator started giving me intermittent voltage trouble about 2 years after I had cleaned up the rotor and replaced the brushes ($12 from your dealer).
Get yours tested (autozone, kragen, whatever), and see what the problem is. It may be a cheap fix, as already mentioned -- bearing, brushes, clean up on contact and resolder. If you don't feel like messing with it, you can find alternator shops online or in the yellow pages.
Another option to hold you over might be a used, working alternator from cruiserparts.net, or ebay/craigslist.

Holy smokes! I didnt realize that 62 alternators were that much more special than 60 alternators. I just bought a Toyota reman for my 60 from CDan for $82.33 + $10 core charge. I would have assumed that the 62 was similar, just slightly higher output for the electic windows, lock, etc. ...
I priced local Napa at $270 , which was about equal to C-Dan plus shipping. (shipping to AK is staggering) Given those choices, I went with OEM. Turned out, I didn't need it- at least for now!
When I bought my LC last month (05/2006) it came w/ a new Bosh alternator. One week later it died. I replaced it w/ a rebuilt OEM for $196. No problems so far.
