Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on the best on/off road tires. I want to purchase 33/12.5/15 tires for my Fj40 and am looking for the most aggresive looking tread pattern with the best wear. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

well i think the best tire on or off road is the kind that dont go flat. if you are just looking for aggresive looks just buy a hot knife and groove youre own. any pattern will look good like skulls and crossbones

I have been reasonably pleased with my BFG Mud Terrains. Balanced well, ride decent, a little noisy and wear faster than say an All Terrian. They suck in the rain and reportedly have weak sidewalls easily cut on the trail. My brother claims to have got 30K out of a set 99.9% street driven.

You can't have both in reality and everything comes at a compromise as they say.

Consider what is really important both now and what you think maybe in a couple years.

This is an interesting thread, but we need to get some more specifics (like what dgangle responded) to really be able to better understand the alternatives.

Are there any UTQG ratings for the tires? (Uniform Tire Quality Grade Standards (UTQG) were originated to provide consumers with useful information to help them purchase tires based on their relative treadwear, traction and temperature capabilities.)
How much highway driving (if any) do you do with these tires?
What kind of mileage do you get out of your tires off road and on the highway?
Are there any driving conditions (on road) where these tires do not perform well (ex: rain)?
How noisy are the tires at highway speeds (say, 55 MPH)?
When you go off road, what tire pressure setting do you most often use?
In off road conditions, how tough or durable is the tire (do you often have to repair flats)?
Have you ever had one of your tires fail, and if so, what were the conditions that it occurred?

BFG All Terrains for both on and off road. I have used both the mud terrains and all terrains many times over the years. All terrains will last a bit longer. Both are great, never let me down. They tend not go flat with nails / screws in them. The mud terrains can get a little load as they wear. Either way both great tires!

this is the first time i have seen (or heard) people say they like BFGs ill never own a pair, if they are given to me as a gift, ill sell them. i always see them wear just WEIRD. like 1 side would be bald the other side 99.9999% tread, or the center will wear, or they just wear fast, or chunks will fall off. i know alot of that "can be prevented w/rotation and proper air" these guys i know who ran them know how to take care of tires... i just dont think they are good quality rubber.

i LOVED my dunlop mud rover, i put 25k miles on a set of 32x11.5 on a wrangler didnt rotate my spare and when i sold the wrangler the tires still worked great! (only thing on the wrangler that didnt break) i have 33x12.5 firestone allterrains on my 40 now (havnt had them long traded a pair or 33x12.5 bfg mts) but i am SO much happier with the firestones than the BFGs
when i get new tires, since i do MOST of my driving on road i think i will get pro-comp a/ts if you search around you will find lots of issues about their sidewalls, but they have a 50k mile tread life warrenty and the little ammount i get to go offroad ill take my chances (dont buy pro-comp w/o the buy 3 get one free sale they have that sale ALL the time... if not 4wd parts then someone will)
but like markh11 said its all about where the tire is going to spend its time
i know guys who love having TSLs for their DDs who spend most of the time onroad
the guy who helps me out so much w/my 40 runs a set of trxus MTs 33x12.5 and he really likes them my .02

dont buy bfg at or mt they are a terrible tire from experience, not good with rocks or snow/ice or water. great tire was a 31 in 10ply firestone destination mt but only got 30k out of them towing 10000lb gooseneck. currently have a set of destination at/s 10ply and wow amazing wear 30k on sofar and barely any wear the local kal tire is amazed. comes with a 100k cost replacement warranty so if you dont get 100k km out of them you pay only like 80 per tire for new ones vs 250. rated for winter as well. also had a set of 33 and 39.5 interco truxxs tires the ones that look like triangles, good on highway poor in mud or sand. had nitto grapplers, louder than boggers and wear faster as well, and they cant keepp air in them even a ten ply. had those nitto flame tires and um 1 comment save your money.. big waste. same as grapplers loud loud loud and wore terribly!. stick with a good at / mt. mt wont wear as fast as on a 1 ton like i had and they look so mean ;) just my 2 cents.

have heard/seen too many horror stories with NFG tires...flats, sidewall gashes ect, havnt seen any wear issues but have not really looked that hard to take note. if i were going to put something on my truck for say a 50/50 type truck i would think about the toyo tires...i think M55's are what we are using on the FJ62 and my dad loves them we have toyo tires on other vehicles as well and have treated us pretty good...drive really well in the snow, rain ect and seem to handle themselves alright offroad...its kind of hard to compare them to other tires though for offfroad as he wheels a 60 and i do in a 40....some people complain about the road noise but i have never really noticed it to be a problem, maybe im just lucky

Ive always had good luck with the BFG,s. The all terrains load up quick here with the red mud and dont seem to clear themselves. Just got a set of the new KM2,s so we,ll se how they hold up. They are quiet so far and ride good.

My god man, are you an engineer?
Almost all of your questions do not have real answers, just guestimates.

Pro comps are pretty much an overpriced junk tire. When the buy 3 get one free sale is on they just bump up the price of the other three tires..

Read around, you will find lots of good experiences with BFG's. I run them on my 60, used to run them on my 40 and my Diesel. They wore like Iron. The only ones I had wear poorly were on a 94 F250 with a twin traction beam. And that was attributed to the truck. I will say that once you start wearing them poorly, they go downhill fast and there is nothing you can do about it.

TSL is not a street tire unless you are masochistic..

10 ply tires are for heavy trucks as a rule. the 33 is a load range C not E.

My nitto TG AT's have 30K on them and are looking great. Louder than boggers?? Really?? Can't keep air in them?

MT's typicaly wear faster than a AT does.

BFG, Toyo, Nitto are all good AT tires.

Just stay away from Mud terrain or any tire that has a tread that "looks cool" and you would be good.

Figure out what you really want to do, what your wheeling style is and then we can go from there.

I've run several sets of 33x12.50 BFG AT's on different Toyotas and have always had good luck with them. The set I have on my 40 will dry rot long before they wear out. I bought a set of General Grabber AT2's last winter for my tacoma and they have a nearly identical tread pattern for 2/3 of the price. I've put over 10k on those and they seem to be wearing really well too.

I run BFG AT's on my DD truck and they are easily the best tire I have owned. I have well over 35k on 'em and they still have a ways to go. I spend most of my days on construction sites where screws and nails abound but I have never had a flat with these babies (I'm knocking on wood right now :)). Can't really attest to their off-road performance but what I've heard from others makes me believe their pretty capable.

I have liked all the sets of BFG's I have had. However, you may want to be aware that in my experience, when they get cold, they loose their grip. My experience in the snow with them has not been good.

I have a set of Cooper STT's on right now and I have liked them quite a bit. Very good in the snow as well.

x2 or whatever for BFG mt's and at's. Never had a problem with them, they wear great, and have always worked well for me in any condition. I've never ripped a sidewall, but then I've never blown a birf either, but I'm sure I will now.

Another vote for the BFG ATs for a mostly on-road tire that you can take off road. You practically can't wear them out. They are not noisy, and much better in the rain/wet than any MT tire. I've had a couple of sets, and once I get the lift on the FJ62, I'm going to run BFG AT's on that. They really are a great tire.

As a second choice, Goodyear MTRs are extremely good. This has been my go-to tire for 10 years and think they are almost as nice on the road as BFG ATs, and are much better offroad. The set on my 80 series has 40k miles and are near the end of their road, but they have taken me everywhere for years. I blew up one of them in death valley running 70 mph:rolleyes: down some very rough washboard. Tore a 4 inch gash in the tread.

I have a mostly worn out set of BFG MT's on my FJ60 right now. For an MT they have worn well, but after the first year they get progressively louder and are scary to drive in the rain. Mine have close to 50k miles which is outstanding for an MT of any brand. They have completely changed that tire with the KM2s and so my experience is likely to differ from new ones.

Toyo MTs look like good tires, and I was going to get a set, but in the experience of one of my 4wheeling buddies who has run 2 sets, they wear pretty fast. He gets about 30k per set which is about 18 months of driving for him. The price you pay for very good traction.

I have been running GoodYear MTR's for years. They have been super tires but won't buy another set only because of the price. Wct49 (here on mud) is a member of our club and a tire dealer. He is running 35" Hankook MT's. Nice mid range tire that is affordable and wears great. We have wheeled the crap out of them in some pretty harsh terrain with no issues. PM him if you want a tire dealers opinion on tires. Good luck.

Later,

I have a set of the Toyo Open Country MTs on my 80, good on the trail, good road manners but kinda noisy on the road over ~45-50 mph. They drown out the rumble of the Cummins 4BTA at about 60-65mph :grinpimp:

I run BFG ATs on my 80 (and 40) around town, waaayyy quieter and they wear better for a DD. I swap the Toyos back on if I'm off to hit the trails.

A buddy of mine has the Nitto TG ATs and seems to like them, he's mostly on road, but shoots off road for hunting excursions.

Hi All:

Well, a recent Peterson's 4 Wheel & Off-Road article rated the Interco Super Swamper Truxus very highly for an on/off-road mud tire.

TrXus MT | Interco Tire

Unfortunately, they don't list the test article on their website.

4x4 Trucks & SUVs, Four Wheel Drive Offroad Vehicle & Truck Reviews at 4Wheel & Off Road Magazine

I've run both AT and MT BF Goodrich tires on different rigs and think they are generally a very good tires. But for extreme 'wheeling they don't cut the mustard - I've switch to Super Swamper TSL bias-ply tires on my trail rig.

Good luck!

Alan
