Best low-boost turbo choice for 1HZ?

I'm sort of in the same boat. I have a stock 1HD-T turbo, but was thinking of building a 7MGTE hybrid or finding a 1HD-FTE turbo. Let me know what Michael says.

Toyota's own upgrade for the 1HD-T turbo IS the 1HD-FTE turbo.
They could have just upgraded to the larger 7MGTE compressor wheel, but they combined it with the smaller turbine and smaller turbine housing.

I got a PM last week, related to a similar thread

"A while back in one of my threads you suggested as an upgrade to the stock 1hd-t turbo I put in the one off the 1hd-fte. Well I did this recently and it's one of the best upgrades I ever did! Holds up the the boost throughout the rpm range and does not drop like my old one.
Thanks again!"

I have a 7MGTE hybrid sitting in my garage, after using a 1HD-FTE turbo on my project, it'll never get used.
if anyone wants a hybrid, I'll sell it for AUD$100 + shipping

I might be interested. Was the difference that dramatic (between 7MGTE hybrid and 1HD-FTE)?

I had a 7MGTE hybrid on my HDJ81 for a short while, and it's definitely an upgrade from stock.
After using the 1HD-FTE turbo, I would not bother with a hybrid again. By not changing the oversized, old tech turbine, a hybrid is half an upgrade at best.
I would search out a used 1HD-FTE turbo, or use a Mamba 1HD-FTE clone. I picked up a 1HD-FTE turbo via lcool.org/forum at a price that's hard to argue against.
On my 1HZ, the 1HD-FTE turbo boosts effortlessly from around 12-1300RPM. It drives like a modern car.

Michael has a nice FTE sitting on a pallet with a manual tranny! I don't know if he'd part with them though...

I have an HZ swapped into a BJ44 that I did two years ago. I did the GTurbo at the same time and have not touched my fuel yet. I drive it at sea level to 5k feet mostly but have had it in CO going over 11 and 12k foot high passes at speed. Let me know if you want to discuss install, turbo, and anything else as you go through this process.

Oh, and I boost as high as I can for the fuel I have... These engines can handle the power and maintain their longevity if you don't drive exceasively hard. I am using the boost to make the truck drive with the availability of more power if needed, but mostly to put more air into the mix to keep temperatures lower. I still don't try to go 70 up Vail or Eisenhower pass, but am fine with going 55 or 60 and knowing that I can pull more if I needed to.

What boost level is possible with stock fueling on a 1HZ? Wastegate is set to about 18psi on a Gturbo I think, is it not?

No wastegate on mine... I see around 11 to 15lbs at cruise and if I put my foot down, I can see more... Because I have not tuned the HDT boost controller I installed, I am sure I am not running optimal AFRs across all boost. I am looking to get more into that this fall when I have some time to commit to getting it dialed in... With a better tune I expect/am targeting to see similar boost but lower EGTs.
