Toyota and Toyota parts. What came stock is IMOP the best there is.
 
Don't Replace Just to Replace

Wait till something fails, it's cheaper to go to an alternative if you are doing it for a reason.

My case: I had a failed magnetic pick (like points on an electronic ignition) up in the distributor (a tough one to track down). A new pick up runs around $150. If the ignitor failed that would be another $240 ish. The inside of my distributor was pretty corroded, OEM replacement around $425.

I ended up going with the Toyota Vacuum Points Type distributor ($190) and adding a Crane optical pick up ($99) to convert from points to electric.

It's a nice set up. Installed over 3 years ago, no problems since. Stock coil, Toyota wires (most aftermarket coils and wires advertise a bunch of hype...).

Bottom line, no sense in replacing unless you have a problem.

I disagree, I upgraded my coil to a Jacob's Ignition Ultra Coil, and I will never look back. Better gas mileage, quicker (for a LC) acceleration, and more torque and power pulling up hills. I upgraded to jacob's wires at the same time pre-sized from MAF.
 
but...........what kinda shape was your stock stuff in? like maybe the old wires were bad, maybe the cap and rotor hadn't been changed for ages or the plugs changed or even gaped right.

ive got a mallory magnetic breakerless distributor for sale. $100 bucks and it's yours. new never installed it, cause i went with a v8 instead.

It was perfect. Wire's we're only about 20k miles old, plugs gapped correctly with about 15K on them, and cap and rotor had about 20K on them. They still looked new as a matter of fact. I just got the itch for a mod, and ordered up the Jacobs.
 
Factory Distributor from Napa is around $200 I believe... (checked back when I was doin the swap)

I got a good used ign. system from a 60 in its entirety for $125.

We'll have to wait and see if that jacobs coil lasts as long as a Toyota. ;)

D.U.I.??? (Davis Unified Ignition) i've seen em... and thought about it... but what i have now works and i am saving up for a diesel so... why spend $$... oh what i have now is a home brew HEI... from a chevy 6...that the PO did.... it works but i don't like it....

Nice picture Pimp. So now I have to ask, what do you guys have against the Jabob? I've been happy so far, and empirical evidence is the best kind.
 
The ignitor in my '83 60 died, so I installed an Accel ignition & coil, then had to put in a Mallory adapter for the tach. You can open the plug gap to .050 & beyond & get a real fat spark. Worked well, started easier & idled smoother until the head cracked/warped.

I've used Accel for years & have always been happy.
 
I have a Jacobs Omni coil that seems to help idle. How much? It is hard to say but it ran better after installing it. I just wonder about a bigger spark and how that changes things.

The question is if anything other than stock bad or better for your engine or just doesn't matter all that much?
 
I have an MSD timing conrol/iginition that never worked right for me.
Keep in mind the hotter/multiple spark ignitions will also cause faster wear on your ignition, ie wires, plugs, cap, rotor. Not a big deal if you change them regularly.

Personally, I think those aftermarket ignitions are built for short term performance, not long term reliability, OEM. Check that, I know it. I also use the term performance loosely because we're talking about a 2F that redlines at 4000 rpm.

There's an MSD off-road unit that always interested me, but I've heard no long term feedback on 'em. There's also a marine unit. But i'll tell ya, if I were planning an expedition where I cannot compromise reliability, no question, OEM.

I love the Mallory system I added on. Hyfire 6AL with a Promaster coil and Accel 8.8mm wires. I had a DirectHits system in addition that ran like a champ for a while, but one of the capacitors went out (at least that's what the tech I talked to figured when I told him my symptoms), and I still haven't sent it back for a warranty replacement set :rolleyes: I really gotta get around to doing that because it was awesome while it worked.
 
My opinion, stick with stock Denso parts. I got the whole works from Cdan about 2 months ago for about $80 (cap, rotor, wires, and plugs).

We spent a day on my buddy's 40 trying to figure out why the Mallory stuff the PO stuck in there wouldnt work. Everything was wired right and grounded right, but no fire. Pulled a abused stock dizzy and coil of the shelf, stuck it in and it fired right off.

I know guys with all the lastest MSD, Mallory, Crane stuff in their trucks and they're always futzing with it. Mine works. Period.
