I will eventually need some tyres for my LJ70. I want something at least 33" tall, not more than 35" though (on paper anyways, actual size can be taller) as to pass inspection. I want them to be good off road and also last long. It will see quite a bit of on road driving, but no high speeds, and comfort is not a concern whatsoever. The finnish terrain is very varied. Mud, dirt, rocks, tree roots, sand, grass and gravel all at the same place.

The options are:

8.25R16C Michelin XZL.
I like the taller and narrower size (34.5x8.5), but I don't know how good a 15-20 year old truck tyre will be. I'm not afraid of dry rot though, I've seen even older Michelin truck tyres that has been on a lorry all their life with no visible cracks. Another plus of the XZLs is that they are regroovable.

255/85-16 Maxxis M8090 Creepy Crawler.
Cross ply construction, is that good or bad? American tyres also tend to be slightly smaller since they don't have the problem of passing inspection like we do in Europe, but I recall reading somewhere that they're slightly over 33".

255/85R16 Toyo Open Country MT
Not as extreme looking as the Crawler or XZL, but has good winter reviews, so I might get away with no winter tyres for a couple of years.

33X10.5-16 CST Land Dragon CL18
Also cross ply. 33x10.5 is on paper not as tall and skinny as 255/85, but theoretical numbers doesn't matter very much in tyres this extreme. I like the tread very much, like Insa Turbo Special Track (that's what I would get if they were availible in 33x10.5) but nondirectional.

The price of all options is basically the same, so that's not a factor, except the Toyos if they're good enough to also be winter tyres. That would save about 500€ per tyre, depending on how cheap studs I can find.

g003 are generally taller and skinnier than just the numbers may have you believe
i would consider them as a good all around performer

Do you have the Falken Wildpeak AT4W available in a 255/85R16? Great option for an all rounder with Load C and light truck construction

Seems like a solid tyre, but not available in Finland or Europe at all in 255/85r16.

Also not available here, and not quite extreme enough for my taste. As I mentioned, off road performance is priority and Insa Turbo Special Track is the gold standard. Would be a great winter tyre though, better than my current options (BFG KO2 and Toyo MT)

The Toyos would fit the bill then.
Just not sure about winter performance on those.
I'm not expecting more than one or maybe two winters of acceptable performance without studs or siping. They seem a lot better than the more extreme CSTs and Maxxis and the ancient XZLs though. Not that it matters too much since I'll get a second set anyways.

I'm a bit curious about the XZLs. I know it's a great tyre in Australia since it's pretty much indestructible, but what about performance in mud and on rocks? I like the tallness and skinnyness, but it's not worth it if they've got the same traction as the BFG Winter Slaloms that's currently on it.

This size m8090 are just perfect , im in love 😍
Probably not available in north america like all the cool things 🤨

I hadn't previously found that german forum, so I googled it up to find some better pictures. A 22cm wide 255? The competition is now between this and XZL. No measured diameter though, I would like some other source than Maxxis themselves.

I found some new to me forum treads about the XZL, and it seems to do fine in mud.

Another option would be the 255/85R16 BFGoodrich KM3 mud terrain, likely a lot more expensive than the others though and possibly run small compared with similar tires in this size.

Also this thread talks about siping and studding for the Toyo MTs so they can be used effectively in Winter too.

interco super swamper comes in 34x10.5. great tire off-road, aggressive. maybe not the longest wearing but i haven't found they wear any faster than my other mud tires over the years.

nvm, edited to add I didn't pay attention to your location, may not be readily available.

Almost 100€/tyre more expensive than the other options. Would probably be the best compromise between off road traction and on road tread life, but as you mentioned they're probably not very tall and skinny. I'll try to look up measured dimensions though.

I believe that's the exact tread I read a while ago when I first started considering them as winter tyres. Hard to tell if they compared them to hakkapeliittas or american "all seasons", but probably closer to hakkas since they're in Alaska.
Review by MotorTrend also states reduced tire life due to a soft compound being used - https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/1406-maxxis-creepy-crawler-tire-test-round-ground-grippers/
Starting to lean a lot towards XZL... Unless CST or BFG happen to be the same 34x8.5 size XZL and Maxxis appears to be.

Doesn't seem to be available in Europe at all. The tread looks terrible on all surfaces, but I suppose it must be quite good since it's such a popular tyre. American tyres also tends to be smaller than their stated size.

The problem with you're requirements is aggressive and long lasting. Imo, the most aggressive in mud is a bias ply tire, but you might get 30k miles out of them. I've been looking at Accelera Badak E-treme for my street 40, but have no experience with them. They're suppose to be radials. I currently run 35-10.50 swamper boggers on my trail rig which doesn't see much pavement. They measure a little over 33". They're awesome.

I know it's a lot to ask for, XZL seems to manage though. Well, at least tread life, opinions differ a lot about how good they actually are off road. Tyres are almost always a compromise, and I'm looking for the best compromise between tread life, off road performance and tall-and-skinnyness.
Accelera Badak is also available in 35X10.5, I'm unsure if I can get 35s through inspection though. I also don't want to lift it so much I start running into geometry issues or have to lie at inspection (according to my research 5cm suspension lift is fine without caster correction, 7.5cm is what I can get through inspection.)

Had any luck finding something suitable?
I probably won't need them for a year, but I've pretty much settled on XZL. Superior tread life and tall/skinnyness has outweighed any concerns about off road performance. I'm used to 205r16 BFG Winter Slaloms, so they're pretty unlikely to be worse.

Edit: I'll update when I get them and when I've used them long enough to review them.
