I need some help from Albuquerque folks who have passed or failed emissions testing. I have an interested buyer for my 1994 FZJ80 but I removed the pair system. Will the emissions tester fail this cruiser for not having the pair system installed?

I’m replacing the O2 sensors as soon as they arrive, so that should fix the CEL for codes 25 & 26. Just want to make this as easy as possible for @greenthumb79 to pass Albuquerque emissions.

Thanks in advance.

it should pass without an issue, also on a 94 myself
Do you have a picture of your engine bay and which test facility and exact location did you use? I’ll send him to that same place if possible. Please and thank you so much

I just have the O2 sensors where the pair was. Left the old O2's as plugs in the stock location by the cats. I used the one on eubank and north of lomas, cool dude. My cats are in good working order and passed with flying colors.

Thank you much for the info. This community is the best.

Was '94 compliant with OBDII? If all the tech has to do is plug in the car to the machine and gets no codes (and no readiness codes that have been erased but not enough drive cycles to set correctly) then it will pass. There is a chance the tech will need to actually run the exhaust gas analyzer if it's not fully OBDII compliant. There is close to zero probability that any technician would notice the absence of the pair system. My dad was an emissions tech for several years after he got a back injury as a mechanic. Keep in mind this was almost 20 years ago so the processes were a little different and the cutoff date for testing back then was 1976. But the only equipment inspection was to be sure the catalytic converters were still installed. Then the vehicle's emissions were tested with the exhaust gas analyzer and the gas cap was tested that it is holding pressure.

Totally unrelated to emissions, but when I took my 2000 LX470 in and he did a visual under the hood, he told me the bad hood struts were an automatic fail for safety of the emissions tech. Thankfully he just warned me of that and didn't fail me. Good luck with yours.
Sounds like a whiner.

I had a few fails for stuff like tailpipe not extended x number of inches from body line, bad gasket at cat, etc yhat they never looked at before . My guy (San Mateo by The Grill) said the state is cracking down and fining techs that are not complying.

Sorry, ditto @2manycruisers he didn’t fail me, he sent me away before he hooked up and didn’t charge me.

Can anyone help with recommending a shop? Emissions failed on high HCO and CO.
Sorry to be a bummer but that's a result of deleting a fresh air injection system. I had both a '76 Datsun and an '87 FJ60 that had issues when the air injection system wasn't working correctly and not putting enough air into the exhaust to help deal with HC and CO.

Not a bummer. Thanks for the info. It somewhat contradicts what @turbomopie said about their 94 without PAIR.
Full disclosure, I've never owned an 80-series and have no experience with the pair system. I just read about it and tried to understand what it's purpose is. Both of my vehicles were carbureted that had issues so there were a lot more areas of potential failure and adjustment.

Thanks. I’m going to call a couple of shops tomorrow as I’m not knowledgeable enough and opinions abound on the internet. Looking at Toyomasters. Another mechanic friend that knows Land Cruisers but moved away recommended Phillip at Browns Automotive near Presbyterian on Wyoming.

Thanks! I’ll keep you posted. I think @banjo1981 still has one as well but it’s in Ruidoso. I’m not sure if it’s best to pay them another $15 for reinspection with it installed or take it to a shop for diagnosis as it could be a few things based on some reading this evening.
