Wasn't talking about all the bit's and piece that bolt to the block. Just between the pan and valve cover. But now that I realize it's a 64 well that's a whole different monster.

Your advice about the 2F is sound. I think it's a much better engine, even though I haven't owned one yet. But keeping the 64 a 64 is important to me, and I think it's reasonably doable.

His feeling is that the ring fracture like that is most often the result of predetonition.

That's what I'm thinking (pre-ignition or detonation in other words). Don't misunderestimate predetonition! :D

The piston looks chewed up (as opposed to getting hit by an ingested unidentified foreign object). You just don't see that with other causes of broken rings, like re-ringing without cutting out the ridge at the top of the cylinder.

It's a portmanteau word :D

Yeah. I just don't know if I did it, way back when I put in a new dizzy, or if it came to me that way. I'm sure I've been driving with broken rings for years.

The ridges at the top of the cylinders don't look too bad. Pretty sure it was honed last time someone was in there. Haven't mic'ed the cylinders yet, either. Maybe they are coned out, which maybe would do that too? But probably not all.

You are right. This engine isn't that trustworthy, it will be expensive and a pain, but switching over the column shift, clutch setup, new carb, linkage, bla bla bla, etc won't be cheap, either.

Column shift linkage would have to change why again?

Clutch/flywheel is compatible with a 2F.

Carburetor/linkage?

No big deal.

:meh:

I can stick a 3 speed on a 2F no issue? :hhmm: :D

Yes sir.

The engine does not know the difference between a three-speed flywheel housing and a four-speed flywheel housing. :)

Transmission linkage is on the steering column, not the engine block.

Transfer case linkage is on the passenger side rear engine mount.

The only hitch that I could possibly see with this is the F single barrel carburetor may be a bit lean for the larger displacement 2F, but if you have another carburetor, or at least a couple more jets, you could increase the diameter of the fuel metering passage to fatten the mixture up a bit without too much trouble.

The throttle linkage pivot is on the side of the engine block as well, so you would likely need to fabricate up a new pivot bracket for that linkage if you were going to keep the single barrel carburetor.

Then again.....he has a good core from a '74 F and a half. Essentially a smaller displacement 2F......rebuild costs are the same, too......Just sayin':D
