I tried to replace the belts today and had some issues, so I'd like to double check. First the main belt (farther from block) runs alternator, power steering and is powered by the crank.... the inner belt runs the air pump and the fan right? Is there a water pump? In the diagram at the dealership (where I went to buy new belts) they say the inner pump goes crank, water pump and air pump? The guy who ordered the parts messed up and bought the wrong inner belt so I held off swapping, but now I'm not even sure I'm going to get the right part the second go-round.

Are there any "trick" to getting the belts on? I loosened the alternator all the way up and its against the engine block, and I still couldn't get the new main belt on, I am afraid of using a flat head as I don't want to damage the belt. The inner belt comes off easily when I loosened up the air pumps brackets.

Frustrating 1st job for me!

This help? (there are 3 belts)

Thats the same diagram, but what is WP? On my truck thats the fan that draws air through the radiator... is there a water pump on the other side? And I don't have AC.

The "C" belt they gave me was correct but the "B" belt was not. Also there are only two places for belts on my crank, but there are 2 on the fan crank (WP in that diagram?).

Water Pump

On my FJ62...the fan is attached TO the water pump. Look for the water lines running to and fro. :D

You want belts "B" and "C". You don't have A/C so forget about belt "D".

You probably have a two groove crank pulley. Outer groove runs the alternator, P/S, inner groove runs the waterpump (which the fan is attached to by 4 bolts, looks like a red flange in your pic), and the smog pump That's it! Good Luck!

Cheers, and keep on Cruising!

yes waterpump and fan are the same pulley.

a fj60 should have a 3 groove crank, AC in the back, Air pump in middle. front, alt/PS they all go at least around the crank.

Dont trust the print-out from the dealership. I just did my belts on my 62 and the print-out from the parts dep was all fogged up. Get a FSM. I wish I had one :o

I you have trouble getting the belts to the correct tension. Try using a wooden broom stick and prying against the block or something hard. Careful not to break anything. It helps if you have two people. One prying or pulling and the other tightening the bolt.

good luck

The belt that you currently have on your smog pump is definitely NOT the correct belt. The width is too narrow. The one you have is an "A" size belt, and the only belts on a cruiser should be "B" size, such as the other belt in your pics. If those fools give you another "A" belt, tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine, cause it won't last long on these torque monsters!

OK, some info and a funny story...

Info - the A/C belt will fit on the Crank/Waterpump/Alternator. The reason you might have to do this someday is if your air pump seizes while you are driving on the freeway. Since the belt for the air pump also drives the waterpump, you can't go far without this belt. When you do this you'll be running w/out power steering, but it's better than not running at all. Now of course it might be better if you fix your leaking powersteering pump so it doesn't cause the airpump to seize...

Funny story - I went into a parts place to purchase an extra A/C belt. I brought a main belt with to get the right width. (The OEM A/C belt is narrower than the two main belts.) The parts guy looked at the belt and asked if it was off of a tractor! He'd worked in a rural NAPA store for a few years, and it looked just like the tractor belts he sold.

so i guess you told him it was a tractor since it is a 2F.... :D
