Desmogged '83 with 201k on the clock. Truck runs strong all around. No AC. Engine was rebuilt by po but didn't get a lot of info on the build. I'm new and have very little experience wrenching. Please be patient. I've done well with thread searches for most things I'm trying to figure out but I'm sure I'll ask dumb@$$ ???'s from time to time.

I've got a little squeal, only when I'm in gear, between 2400 & 2700 rpm. Tensioner pulley? Belt?

Also I've got a 6 to 1 header with 2 1/2" in & 2 1/2" out of the muffler with about 2' of tail pipe. I get a fair amount of exhaust in the cab when riding with the window down. Typical? I'll probably put a 50 series on in the near future. Should I fab exhaust to exit at the rear or stick with the shorty set up?

I know everyone has their own opinion so I expect that answers will vary. Any/all advice is appreciated. Random pics bc everyone always asks.

.

It could be a belt, or could be the airpump which squeals when it's starting to fail.

Try putting belt dressing on one belt, then on the second. If you still have the squeal, look real carefully at the air pump. If belt dressing makes the squeal go away, then either your belt(s) is too loose, or is worn. Be careful tightening them up however, as it can overstress the waterpump bearing and/or powersteering pump bearing. The belts should be as loose as possible, but not so much that they squeal.

Belt was slipping. New belt, baselined all fluids (diffs were crudded up), does a 2f really take 7+ qts. of oil??? Took wiper motor apart, cleaned, oiled, no more whining. New horn. Ground rust out of frame rails by rear shackles and welded 1/4" plate over the peepholes (ghetto), primed & por'd. Removed door panels and serviced all four regulators. Cleaned & serviced drums ( just needed new springs) ebrake works finally.
New dizzy on the way! I tried to holler at Mr. Jim about a recurve but he's super busy I guess. Hopefully this new one is legit (GM dizzy machined and coil upgraded to 65k). I'll just send my old one out to Jim for a recurve & have a spare either way. Next up is a knuckle rebuild then 2" suspension lift if I can ever save the money up?
Does anyone else's gf/wife just laugh & shake their head when you start talking about the benefit of greasable shackles?

My girlfriend has no idea what I'm talking about, ever. I installed a 62 dash grab bar and she noticed that. Only because it helps her get in.

Nice 60!

Thanks Kline, if I had waited until I got the truck I would've made my screen name FJSixtyfooter. I put a magnet on the rear quarter when it rolled off the trailer & it shot straight through the bondo & hit the frame rail. I love it though. The sickness is strong with me. Only if my bank account matched. Hope school is going well!!!
