Believe it or not... I need a new engine.

Hey guys sorry for the delay. Canada day long weekend proved to be a tough time to get it diagnosed, whoever guessed that it was the manifold... Shop says it is cracked all the way across and that is what is making the knocking (and ticking) sound. He also noted the oil was quite low, which is odd as I recently gave it a change.

But anyway, the guy said he had never worked on a land cruiser before (they're kinda rare in Canada apparently) so he referred me to a land cruiser fanboy/Toyota mechanic (Toyota dealer) for the work. Haven't got a quote yet but he informed me it's not gonna be cheap. So 2 questions, how much do you guys think it will cost for a stealership shop to fix it? and can it be done by a weekend hobby mechanic (myself).

And a big thanks for all the support, this is my first real call for help on the forums and you guys have been super helpful:cheers:

Is it drivers side or passesnger? Passenger is easily done by yourself. A flex head ratchet and medium depth sockets are your friend.

Right on! It's on the passenger side. I'm starting a 4 days on 4 days off rotation soon hopefully I can dig up a good guide and fix er up myself!

Replace the manifolds with Doug Thorley headers

Where in Canada are you located?

Awesome news!

Yet another 2uz alive and well! I bet the high load event when you heard the noise first was just heat finally defeating the steel and cracking through the header. Common issue, so the forums say, but haven't dealt with it myself. I'd take a hard look at the Doug Thorley option.

Will do!

You will need new headers... they are a pain in the butt to install. I can do them
Haha might as well upgrade right! I live in Vancouver

Doug Thorley might not pass lower mainland emissions tests...

They pass California tests if that is worth anything.

Last I checked, they still didn't have a CA certificate of some sort and could fail the visual inspection. Has that changed?

Pretty sure @spressomon got called on these when living in California. I think he just painted them black, and the next smog tech did not notice. Pretty sure they are not legal though, and will fail the visual part of the test if the smog tech is alert.

hmm I had read that they did... I could easily be mistaken about that though.

Doug Thorley headers for the 2UZ-FE are not CARB compliant. DT does not possess a CARB compliancy certificate for these headers. Yeah, I know DT still states on their website they are "50-State Legal"; its BS.

Do a little search'n in the 100-Forum if you're a non-believer. I have enough experience with DT & CARB to write my own thesis.

Would you put DT back in if you were to do it again? I'm looking at having to do drivers side soon

Yes. FYI: My first gen DT headers for our 2UZ-FE from the original group buy cracked. DT replaced them at no charge but I had to incur the labor. The passenger side is a snap (~45-minutes); the driver's side is a PITA.

Given Toyota exhaust manifolds had a propensity to crack (mine included) and my 2nd gen DT SS headers have not and if you're not concerned with passing smog in a CARB state they're worth the $.

I had the emissions techs refuse to test my Supra a few years back because my legitimate cat didn't "look" like a legal cat to them. It was 100% legal, 49 state certified, made by magnaflow. I got my paperwork from Magnaflow and came back and a different tech argued with me for 10 minutes before letting me test. Had their not been a line of people waiting I think he would have kept arguing. I was completely, 100% legal, yet they refused to even test the car.

Sometimes the emissions techs are a huge PITA even if you are legal, but it looks "aftermarket".

Even after going through all that... I'd do it again. Paint them matte black if you have a tech inspection similar to California.

Just better performance?

^ yes, you will notice a 'seat o'the pants difference'. Not like adding an SC or TC but the difference is noticeable, especially at/near sea level.
