Good evening,

Does anyone happen to know the minimum thickness of the brake disc on an HJ60?

I’m measuring 19mm right now (so I guess it needs replacing?).

I found an instruction video on YouTube for doing it yourself:

Is this something a reasonable beginner can do on their own?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Regards,

Ben

Yes, 19mm is the minimum rotor thickness recommended by Toyota.

To get the rotor off, you're going balls deep into the hub, so plan to do wheel bearings and related seals, and consider doing the entire swivel hub if it hasnt been done in living memory..

Its absolutely a job that a beginner will find very intimidating and daunting.. for that reason, its a great task for a beginner! Go for it.

Thanks a lot for the clear info!

Good to know that 19 mm really is the minimum spec, looks like I’ll go ahead and replace them.

I also understand now that I’ll need to pull the hub apart and re-pack/adjust the wheel bearings. Sounds like a good learning project. From what I’ve read I’l need that 54 mm hub nut socket as well, right?

Appreciate all the advice, really helpful for a beginner like me!

Cheers,
Dutchben

Yes, 54mm Hub Socket required. If you're planning to own this 60 long term its an essential tool to buy.

For bearing/hub/swivel hub work the other essential tools to own (in my opinion) are a good set of brass drifts, and a pair of duck bill snap ring pliers. As long as you have a reasonable tool set already (sockets, spanners etc) you wont need a great deal more.

There's no end of YouTube videos on the job - most Landcruisers have the same basic swivel hub assembly so any videos for 40, 60, 70, and 80 series are worth watching, the more you watch the better prepared you'll be, watch videos on brake bleeding as well. And depending on funds, consider a new set of brake calipers if its still running the original factory ones - after 40years they'll be due for a rebuild and its not worth the effort (in my opinion).

Buy a full swivel hub rebuild kit - its not worth repacking the bearings unless you know them to be under a few year old, replace them. The parts for this job are really quite cheap - well at least in Australia, I have no idea of the availability and pricing in the Netherlands.
