Some may remember this post I made a couple of years ago.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/230104-new-person-saying-hello.html

So in the two years since I have posted this nothing has been done to the Land Cruiser. To get it shipped from SC to MO is around 1200 bucks. Another is reason is I decided to join the Navy but to do that I had to lose alot of weight. I've dropped 65 pounds so far just to join. Those two reasons are why its still in SC today and not being worked on. Recently I've been finding myself want to get another BMW and a motorcycle but it dawned on me last night I still have the Cruncher. Soooo that being said before I leave I'm might have it shipped here or keep in SC. I have had basically two offers to help getting this thing going. A.) To goto South Carolina and do some work on it there. B.) Ship it here to a friends shop (he works on european classic cars) send him money while Im in the Navy so he can work on it. I want start fixing it because it does no justice to my dad just sitting there. If you were in my shoes what would you do?

I don't have advice to offer on which way you should go regarding having is shipped to MO or keeping in in SC, but I live in South Carolina and know a thing or two about early Cruisers.... I would be more than glad to come lend you a hand if you need help getting it running/driving.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Sorry if my first post on this thread was hard to understand. I work nights and got only 3 hours of sleep that day. I have a couple of old photos but they're on my home comp. A problem that I keep on running into is a source of parts for this beast. The hard top is beyond repair but everything else body wise is great. I really dont know what it needs mechanically (other than the trans) since I havn't worked on it since 1998. Does anyone know of a good source for parts for the FJ25? Thanks for the offer if I keep it in SC. There might already have 3 or 4 people giving me a hand so space will be tight lol.

Thanks,

Hunter

Hunter,

Welcome Back! Check out the Count the 25's Thread and see if yours is there (I can't remember them all anymore) Add it to the thread if it isn't though!

Parts - the folks here in the 25 is your clearing house for parts and info. Parts thread is stuck to the top of the section. Just ask in the classifieds for anything else. We can tell you what swaps from a 40 if you go that route.

As far as your question I would vote for going to SC and doing some wrenching yourself. A project in a shop requires a lot of personal involvement and boat load of money (even with a friend doing the work). Ask the opinion of those that have worked with shops here on the board.

Transmission - your first post said the tranny went bad.........depending on what it is and how long it was driven it may be an easy fix. Take off the shift tower and side plate and take some pics.

The hardtop is shared with the early 40, hook up with Clemson Cruiser, he may have some leads.

Awesome! I'm going to try call our friends to see what all were going to do while I visit SC. I might make a parts list when I call him. The trans wouldn't go into gear a block away from my parents house in SC. Sorry no pics, the trans is 1300 miles away lol. I forgot to ask but do alot of mechanical parts from the 40 work on the 25?

You can switch out most parts from a 40 to 25..... specifically in your tranny situation you could replace with a later model FJ40 4-speed transmission but you would also have to swap over the t-case, bell housing, clutch, flywheel etc. You can make just about any FJ40 part work in an FJ25 but most if not all situations will require some minor modifications.

I have alot of early FJ40 parts just laying around, including hardtop parts, that might be of use in getting you back up and running. When you figure out what you need just shoot me a PM.

Good luck:cheers:

Post us some pictures the old post does not have the pictures on it anymore. Guessing SC is about 15 hours drive time, you could go there and work on it and then tow it home to MO. But what ever you do keep it and get it running for your sake, and your dad's. Have someone help with the trans, it might be a simple fix, knowing that was wrong with would be good to know. Did it lock up, did engine run but not move the vehicle, would it not shift into gear? Post what you know about the problem and the smart people here might know how to fix your existing trans problem, or even clutch problem. So give us some pictures and some symptoms of what went wrong if you have them.

Sorry its taken a while to post back here, work has been a bitch and Im working out a lot. Plus my sister came in to town from NYC so Ive had little free time.

I'll post some pics of it late late tonight (its my night off tonight) and tomorrow I should be able to contact my friends in SC to get a list of what needs to be done first or what they feel needs to be done first.

My last BMW was a 1987 325is, it had so many problems I sold it, I should've have kept my 5. Then I had a 1969 Chevy C10 that was a project but I sold that at the start of this year.
