Hey Guys

We are doing a Winter Baja trip the second weekend in January and are going to start planning now!

When: January 11th-13th
Where: Baja
Where Exactly: Mikes Sky Ranch and Laguna Hansen
Why: Because it will be nice and cold at the highest point in baja! :D
Who: First 7 rigs to say they are in for sure

PLEASE NOTE: Last minute backouts will NOT be welcomed on future trips, this is all too common and unfair to other folks that want to go

The List As Of Now:

-Boston Mangler
-Grizzley
-619Toy
-Dan2722
-Boydmick
-rckcrwlr
-LandCrusher'70

The Plan:
-Depart San Diego early Friday AM on the 11th
-Arrive in Laguna Hansen mid day Friday taking our time.
-Setup camp and spend Friday night in Laguna Hansen.
-Break camp Saturday am after breakfast
-Head to Mikes Sky Ranch
-Visit the observatory, should be AWESOME views that time of year
-Find camp near Mikes
-Spend Saturday night atop Mikes at one of the campgrounds!
-Break Camp Sunday AM and head home.

Should be a lot of nice scenary and easy off road driving.

Notes:
-You MUST get your insurance before crossing the border, we will NOT be stopping at the border for insurance! NO EXCEPTIONS, so dont ask!

-**** PASSPORTS WILL BE REQUIRED STARTING JAN 1st of 2008!!! ****
-Lets please limit this thread to planning and try to stay on topic, please only reply if seriously interested!
-It will be COLD, possible snow, so if you want to come, be prepared
-The roads are easy and does not require any special gear, however, snow might change that! :D
-Each time we have been to Laguna Hansen, it has been awesome!

Here are a few photos from previous trips, dude in the unimog was a chase team for a bike tour company, very cool!:

Oh and by the way I see you are smart and coming back on Monday instead of Sunday.

Actually that was a typo! Dates are now corrected! Leaving on a Friday AM and returning Mid Day!

Is the passport deal going to be in effect the first of the year? Something to warn possible attendees.

EXCELLENT POINT!!! Editing post now!

Wow, that looks awesome. Kevin, do you happen to know if there are any problems bringing dogs into and back out of Mexico? I'm sure you remember Zoey and by then she will have a little brother as well:).

How many miles is it round trip? I couldn't find a map on the internet.

No, we do it all of the time, but you MUST have their papers in order (cert of health, shots, etc...)

Very cool!

Guesstimate, not more then 250 and plenty of places to fuel up, no problems there

Cool, I'll start getting my ducks in a row. My passport expired about five years ago but I know that it's pretty easy to get a new one once you've already gone through the process (just time consuming).

Unless I run into some huge snag, consider me in 95%:D

Yeah, my mother just got one and it took 7 weeks!

Awesome!

Why the drama Dave? :flipoff2:

Removing a thread take all of 2 key strokes! Editing a title takes probably 20-30 strokes!

Whats the issue dude? :D :D :D

Thread starters used to be able to do all of this themselves, why the change? PM Me the answer

Back on topic please!

Who wants to join us on this trip?

I really like this idea!

I have to talk to my girlfriend to see if she wants to go (or will let me go alone) and to check if we have any other plans.

I too need to renew my passport. . . .I better get on it!

Kevin, this sounds awesome I have been wanting to explore this part of Baja as all of my trips have been along the Pacific coast.

Will a relatively stock 80 have any problems on this trip? By the time of the trip I should have a set of Hanna sliders on but the rest of the rig is stock no lock.

My passport is up to date, the :princess: said "Please go" , the boss  will give me the time and I love winter camping.

No problemo! Tires? Might encounter some snow, but should be ok!

No problem! I am more concerned about your personal gear (for warmth) then your rig gear! :D

Game On! Your added!

Thanks, Kevin.

I have a new set of BFG AT 265/75/16 (the teeny tire) so should ok on the snow. As far as personell warmth I am usually trout fishing in the Sierras in January so I have all the cold weather stuff.

This is going to be FUN!!

I was researching passport information for my brother who may ride along with me on this trip and found out that ths State Department has pushed out the requirements for a passport to the summer 2008.

Here is the link http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

I was also under the impression that Jan. 1st 2008 was a hard date to have a passport but I guess that changed with the rush by everyone to get one this past summer for air travel.

I would still get one to be on the safe side and summer 2008 is not that far away. When I was down in August I did not have mine with me and the border patrol lady at the checkpoint gave me a little grief for having one but not bringing it.

Good Call! I always like to play on the safe side, i always bring my passport with me when in Mex, i know its not needed, but it does make crossing easier!

Glad to hear your still on board!

You might want to check with Mike's, but I don't think they allow dogs. :frown:

Thanks Robb

We plan on camping nearby Mikes, not at Mikes.

I am assuming that you mean they dont allow dogs at the ranch overnight correct?

Thanks

Either way, we will work around it so folks can bring their dogs!

Thinking of coming Robb?

Yes, from what I recall, dogs are not allowed overnight.

I am up in the air. Wishy/washy.
