Just info-

The passport requirements for land travel into Mexico don't begin until Summer 2008 (no official date yet).

Starting Jan. 31, 2008 verbal proof of citizenship will not be accepted, but a birth cretificate + driver's license is acceptable.

More info here (see page 6)

Obviously a passport is best, but we should be fine with just a driver's license. If you want to be safe; bring your birth certificate too!

So don't let no passport stop you from making this trip!

It is anticipated that starting January 31, 2008, verbal declarations of identity and citizenship alone will no longer be accepted. On this date, U.S. and Canadian citizens entering the U. S. at land and sea ports of entry from within the Western Hemisphere will need to present (1) government-issued proof of citizenship,
such as a birth certificate,
along with (2) government issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license.

Passport or birth certificate and drivers license. A drivers license is not a
government-issued proof of citizenship and it will not be accepted without other ID proving your citizenship. The border agents are already asking for proof of citizenship and give you a hard time if you provide only a drivers license.

Trip info

Boston M-

Is your current rig count still at four? Stan/RFJToy told me about this thread and I am really interested in the trip. I have never been to the areas you will be exploring and it looks really scenic.

I have been doing overland surf trips through-out western coastal baja for 3 decades and have a good handle on what to generally expect but as I stated earlier, I don't know the area so going with others will be great. .

My rig and gear should be more than sufficient for the trip but I am open to any suggestions the group has. I'm in if you have for another rig?

1 FJC
2 people. Myself and my 15 year old son who has lots of experience camping and wheeling in Mex.

I have a couple of questions?

What route will you use? Do you head home the same way you came.

Do you normally stop to buy auto insurance at the border or do I need to have it ahead of time? I can buy it at AAA.

Anyone bringing any light tackle fishing gear along, some of the mountain creeks hold trout?

Thanks.

I am officially "in" + 1 dog.

Cindy wants to go and if she gets the time off it will put me at:

1 vehicle
2 adults
1-3 dogs (depending on sitters)

Making plans already:)

Boyd-

Here is some info about bringing dogs to and from Mexico.

All one needs to bring their pet into Mexico is a bit of paperwork. Two bits of paperwork to be exact:
  • 1. A vaccination certificate stating that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies, hepatitis, pip and leptospirosis.
    2. An official health certificate that must be issued by a veterinarian no more than 72 hours before entering Mexico.
You may enter the country with up to two large pets (dogs or cats). If you want to enter the country with any more than two pets you would need permission, which could be obtained from the Mexican consulate nearest you. In any case, it would be a good idea to go to a Mexican consulate ahead of your trip and inform them of your plans. You will be relieved to know that there is no quarantine period required for bringing a pet into Mexico.

I think those last three are for cats only.

I get my mex insurance through my insurance company USAA which makes it super easy, they just email me the policy.

My brother and I are bringing light tackle gear for trout that are supposed to be in the streams around Mike's Sky ranch. We have not fished here but I read that there are trout in the streams and figured why not throw in a rod and reel. Fishing at Laguna Hansen is prohibited.

Sound good! Yes, we have room for one more!

Do you head home the same way you came.

This is always decided on the fly. For example, we usually go into Mex via San Yasidro, but ALWAYS come back via Tecate.

We will NOT, repeat NOT stop @ the border for insurance, this MUST be obtained BEFORE we leave!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!

I wouldnt bother most of this trip is going to be focused on DRIVING and seeing sights, NOT fishing

I'll pick up insurance through AAA.

Doesn't sound like Kevin likes trout. ;)

Thanks for the info.

Hey Kevin, count me in.

I've only camped along the coast and in San Felipe, never in the mountains of Baja. This is gonna be awesome.

Going to renew my passport.
