Is it possible to tell if a bearing is bad by looking at it?
If a bearing is making lots of heat should it look burnt or blue?

Re:Dad Bearings

Generally, you'll see pitting, scoring, discoloration, galling or a race surface that's clearly excessively worn. As to looking burnt or blue, I've seen bearings that were shot but did not have discoloration at all. I suspect it has to do with at what stage it was caught and replaced. Some bearings don't have enough load on them to get the heat it requires to discolor (ex clutch throwout bearing).
