The back of the 1996 FJ seems lower than the front and you feel all the bumps and the back seems to sway slightly? What does this mean. The sway bar and bushings look good and the shocks seem fine, but it is driving me nuts. Advice?

Suggestion for how to fix it? Replace springs I suppose but with what kind? I usually have a consistent load in it because if 3 children plus accessories and stereo system. Where should I get the springs from, what brand....?

try looking at the faq's. The question is what is the intended purpose, do you want to lift it? or close to stock height. OME has some stock springs, or you can get toyota replacements. Shocks probably aslo need replacing. You might add in your signature, the year and mileage of you LC, as you ask questions in the future it will help ge to the point quicker.

Your describing two problems: The sag is usually springs with not enough height and/or spring rate for the load. The sway is usually soft/warn shocks. Is it a LC or LX, the LX has very soft shocks from the factory, changing them to LC shocks makes a big difference.

The OME setup maybe a good choice? Depending on the ride, load capacity that you want, they are a stiffer setup and will make for a firmer ride. If your not looking for a lift, one option is to replace the shocks with stock replacements from Dan ~$120. That may solve the problem, if not add a set of stock height OME springs.

I once had that sway feeling on another car and in fact one of the springs was broken. But aren't springs supposed to last for a (rig) lifetime? Otherwise, get it while it's hot and get a full replacement from OME.

More info would be good here. Anything ever done to the suspension by previous owner? What make is this?

I think MAF is currently having a sale on spring/shock kits.

That is why I am looking to upgrade now.

Yep, they're having a "sale". $759 sted of 799, but that's merely 5% off. Nothing to howl about IMHO, especially as a pro installation will add a lot to it.

yeah 5% but I'll take it - i hate full price! :)

pro-installation? grab a buddy and this is a :banana:or :banana:DIY project - at least my (sold) Disco's springs & shocks only took a few of hours to change. Minus the front end alignment.

If I put a lift on the back of 1.5 inches or 2, will I need to change the front as well, It is the wife's vehicle and trip taking vehicle. It gets 18 mpg and my 95 only gets around 12. I do not want to spend more that a few hundred or possible 400, what can I get for that would be a good ride but not excessively firm. There is always around 400 pounds in the back with kids and all. Strollers, groceries. I don't mind stock, but I would like a 1.5 inch lift on the whole thing if I knew it would not affect the steering or mpg's

Give Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters a call, he knows the OME line and I bet his price is better than MAF, when the "kits" compared apples to apples, ie both kits having the same parts.

If you want it to be around $400 I'd go with OE springs, LC shocks, and a 1" spacer. Your springs are probably already sagging down so with the 1" spacer plus the extra lift from the new springs will get you about where you want to be.

I'm sure Toyota took into account atleast 400lbs of bodies and storage when designing there springs. So you shouldn't have any problem there.

I was in the same situation as you and replaced my sagging springs with OME 861/862 stock height springs with new Toyota OEM shocks. The difference in ride quality is huge. No more wallowing in the corners, bouncing rear end with a heavy load, or nose dive under braking. Note you will get a small lift from these springs depending on how much your stock springs are sagging.

By far the OME 861/862's (+ new OEM shocks) are the best mod to date.

Thanks for the info!! I'll check that out.

I bought some used springs, when another member upgrade, and added 1/2" spacer and got over 3/4" lift at each corner. Also much inproved ride. I would think you could go all oem for less then 400.
