Hi all, based on information in this thread i have gathered the following data:

Frame no.................Engine No............Build Date
HJ45-048732...........H 89908.............5/1980
HJ45-048488...........H 89598.............5/1980
HJ 45044134...........H 80720.............1/1980
HJ45-008169...........H 37242.............1/1976
HJ45-004940...........H 30931.............1/1975

Does this mean that if I am looking for an "era correct" H engine for a 1979 HJ45 troopy the engine serial number should fall somewhere around 89xxx or 7xxxx?

Also another question, were the engine numbers sequenced differently based on the destination market? e.g. Would the engine numbers start with an "8" or "7" for all European or General market vs. the engine numbers for General countries that would start with another digit?

Do we have more HJ45 owners who can please post their engine serial numbers?

Hey mine is a HJ45-50505 frame. Engine is 92186. Records register it as being a 1980 model. The dealership invoice is dated October 15th, 1980. Thats all the info I got.

Oct of 1984 3b 60 series cruiser, 530'000km on it, just pulled the motor in preperation for a freshening up,
engine serial number is 0683968
Block number 11411-58040
I was trying to figure out if it was the original motor and it appears that it very well could be according the graph. Still has nearly 400psi for compression so i likely wont end up pulling the head.

I have read a bunch trying to find out how to tell wich 3b’s have five bearing cams. From what I have seen is a significant upgrade. the three bearing cams at 300,000k the bearings and cam are torn up still runs well, you wouldent notice.

Pretty much all I found was that the block numbers end with 040 for a five bearing cam. Any other combination isent?
EB623364-3DE8-42E9-866B-8F6A3A87739B.jpeg

like this block ending in 010 would be a three bearing cam?

Is this Toyota law, or are there exceptions to this rule.

Apologies if this isn’t the place to ask.

Poser/Steve is doing it in the "40 and 55 series tech forum" as a "sticky" for cruisers with F and 2F petrol engines. So I'm thinking ....why haven't we done the same for our cruisers fitted with B, 2B, 3B, H, 2H, 13BT etc diesels.

Once sufficient people contribute in each vehicle/engine category (which I admit may take significantly longer than for Steve's thread - due to the lower numbers worldwide) ....graphs like this one (put together by Martian) can eventually be made:

View attachment 429123

This graph enables someone who buys a second-hand 2F engine to work out its production date easily and with reasonable accuracy - from just the serial number.

And it's not easy for the owner of a diesel cruiser to even pinpoint the production date/month of the vehicle itself! So hopefully this thread can eventually help there too (from the input of owners who already know all this data about their vehicles).

And we can also include details in this thread of where to locate identification details. For instance on the B- diesel (1B) fitted to a BJ40, the engine serial number is found here:

View attachment 730759
Edit Feb2013 - Swapped this pic because the one I had there before was of the number on my spare engine which was inconsistant with my details shown below.

It took me a long while to discover this hidden location and it was very hard to photograph. You actually need to look down between the 2 rearmost ports of the inlet manifold (by the dipstick).

Anyway I'll kick this thread off with details of my vehicle:
Landcruiser model : BJ40RV-KCQ
Build date (as accurate as I'm able to determine): July 1979
Engine Serial No: 0294407
Block Casting : 11411-56020
Frame No. (also called "VIN No.") : BJ40 - 0038478

PS. I have a personal motive for doing this in that I want to determine the build date for that spare engine I bought ....ie. The one whose serial number I photographed above.

PPS. Is anyone able to show me how to determine the build date directly from any casting data on a 1B block?

Hello LostMarbles,

Greetings from Queensland in Australia!

I recently bought a long wheel base Land Rover Series 2A which the previous owner shoehorned a Series B Toyota Diesel into. The engine serial number is 0299706. Could you identify what donor vehicle the engine came from and what date it was manufactured?

Kind regards
Lionel

Here's my 41

I was told it is a 1975 but I have no idea

The part number or casting number has no direct correlation with engine internal specifications.

There is indirect correlation of engineering changes that might have happened from a part number like 11411-58010 to a later 11411-58040.

The movement from -58010 to 58040 is engineering based but it designates processes at the interface between part engineering-part supplier (in this case Toyoda Industries casting operation which provided the same block to Hino and Toyota)-and the master parts catalog development logic.

It’s a bit convoluted at first, but takes a hold of your mind pretty quickly if you can see— at multiple levels —Toyota’s overarching logics during that historical time period In TPSs development.

It might be worthwhile sharing this as it explicates how to read certain Toyota part numbers and shows what exactly each digit/set of digits means.

Hope that helps.

I've been crawling the forums for weeks while searching for my first Landcruiser. Finally took the plunge and bought a BJ42 the other day. It was advertised as a '77 FJ40, but after looking through posts and digging around some, it seems to be an '84 BJ42. You'll have that. :)

Posting some info and pics and it would be great if someone could confirm for me.

Frame number: BJ42-006681
Block casting: 11411-56010

Landcruiser model: BJ42LV-KC
Build date: March 1984
"VIN" plates are both gone so I can't reference anything...
Haven't got the engine serial #
Edit: engine serial is 0119388
Seller said it was imported from Costa Rica

Wow, Thanks. I looked there but could not figure out how to get the build date. Another question please; I only have the data plate in the engine compartment and the one on the frame, did it have any other data plate? My 71 FJ had the one on the door post, which had the build month.

Any update of the depredations sheet on 3B engine serial numbers.

Gday I’m trying to do the same thing work out how old my engine is and weather or not it’s the engine it came with from factory I took some photos if any one know how to read it would be great
Model number hj47rp-kq I think
Frame number hj47-028539
Engine number 1061343
Engine number 30928 with the number 14 above it
Also wondering where the photos can tell if it’s lined or unlined
