maybe i will try a replacement pipe where the muffler is and see what happens...
good suggestion
how noisy does it get?
cheers

My truck had the stock exhaust before I turbo'd it. It is louder with the turbo and NO muffler but not objectionably so. It has a totally different sound though. You hear it more passing through tunnels or when driving adjacent to concrete highway dividers with the windows down.

Hello again

Thanks for the info. I'm interested in the exhaust issue as well. I may be completely off-base; however, I was thinking that the limitation in the exhaust may be associated to the cylinder head rather than the exhaust system itself. Just a thought…

Anyway, if I do decide to go with AXT, I think that I will order directly from Australia.

But …… it was also mentioned that AXT might not be the best choice. I would be interested in any info regarding other kits that are available.

Thanks again

Mike

what city are you located in? i would look at building your own kit and i am sure there are those ont he list that can give first hand knowledge/help/suggestions in creating your own.
Safari makes a darn nice kit. they are in Australia also.

Pretty sure Safari no longer builds a kit for 3Bs?????

In the past I spoke with 8 different manufacturers of turbos in Oz, out of them only two ran a water side. Thier claim is the water units were designed for the gas pots and with the lower exhaust temps the water is not needed in thier opinion.

We recently installed a Denco on Kiwiwonders rig and he drove it from Vancouver Island up and across to Alberta then down through the mountains all the way to California. He noticed higher EGTs in the mountains but never ran into a problem.

This is the first and only turbo I have installed, I watched someone install a AXT and feel the Denco would install in almost half the time.

The Denco came pre assembled on the manifold.

YOu will not get the big numbers of boost out of a Denco that the AXT claims, but IMO if you push it your engines life span is greatly shortened.

Other good choices are the older Lebaron Turbos, Nissans and Andre mentioned that the Volvo turbos also work well. From my expierence the CT26 kicks in quite a bit higher RPMs limiting the type of use.

Good luck.\

I have the ct26 in mine, drove from vancouver to Quebec this summer and back and it performed great!
I have 33's and stock gearing, also 5 speed.
I am going to try it with stock tires on soon to see what it is like.

As for exhaust, this is from a book i have called Diesel fundamentals, service and repair by Bill Tobalt.
It says, "every effort must be made to reduce back pressure. As back pressure increases, power drops, fuel economy decreases, valve temperatures soar and cooling system temperatures rise.
Special care must be taken in selecting exhaust pipes to be sure they are of sufficient diameter and there are no sharp bends. Pipes of small diameter will cause backpressure as will sharp bends."

My exhaust is 3 inch but i have two sharp bends, they were not welded bends.
I'm looking at redoing my exhaust so it is straight out.
Another intersesting line from this book, "when bends are necessary, the radius should be at least four times the diameter of the tubing." Isn't that crazy.
hope this helps,
john

I ws just reading in a chat about some other possibilites for a turbo in the 3b.Nissan,Volvo,Lebaron (chrysler) were all mentioned as well as a CT26.
I have recently purchased my first cruiser (BJ60 3b).I would love to do the AXT but i find it a little on the steep side especially including the shop time required and exhaust mods.
I appprecaite all the info that i received just reading in the chats,if anyone has anymore info or horror stories of these above mentioned turbos please pass them on.Thanks

AFAIK CT26 is simply the housing. The inner workings are what makes some CT26's better for some applications and worse for others. I don't know all the ins and outs but things like vane size, angle, etc on either sides of the housing changes the spool up characterisitcs and how much air the fresh side moves.

A complete listing of CT26's and the ratios on both sides would be a welcome addition to many's knowledge base.

I did an AXT turbo on my BJ60 and it took me a day to install on my own including running around for some fittings to plumb things the way I wanted.
I found what I am told is a Volvo turbo for my kids FJ55/3B restoration but we havn't got the restoration finished as we are still scratching up the final few parts and I'm not able to work on it for the next few months.
I post up the comparison once we've got the '55 on the road.

Hi guys thanks for the imput.I have been pretty busy looking up other possibilites and the list seems to get longer and longer.I tried out the turbo match site i ended up with the same GT25 which is made by Garrett who makes most of the volvo turbos.I have contacted Holset and 3K via e-mail but no reply as of yet.I was tyring to find out if Axt actually does their own fabrication or if they buy the turbo and assemble the kit but i haven't had any luck.If anyone has a serial number off an AXT that would or could help out a lot.
Thanks again

Check the dtlc archives there is a bit about them in there: http://www.birfield.com/modules.php?name=Archives&p=/archives/html/dtlc/
I asked this not long ago and this is what I got from craig, bruce thought it was the T03:
Garrett CT-26 or T3
Exhaust A/R: .48
Compression A/R: .42

From what I looked at the gt25 seemed fine but there are many variations of trubos in the same housing. I want to say a gt-25 with a .63 was 1k for the turbo alone (new that is).

AXT is a Garrett turbo and the nameplate is a pain to read with all the plumbing.
