So, after reading the tech article about shortening a D60 and the 14b bible on the PBB, I've come to the conclucion that it would be "relatively" cheap and easy to shorten the front D60 to 64.5" and the rear 14b to 63". My question is, is this an acceptable difference to run on a DD. Forget about flares and tire coverage, I'm mainly concerned with the track. Would you need spacers in the rear? On paper, it looks like a perfect middle ground b/w stock cruiser axles and full width 1-tons.

IMO, yes....however, a cheaper alternative is rims with proper backspacing...Hummer beadlocks (or others) will keep your tires in pretty tight and save you $$ on the axle work.

Ther are problems with massive amounts of Backspacing tho.. The tires will get into the springs and links much easier and without a spacer or recentering hummer rims you are looking at hy steer almost exclusivly..

i assume you are looking at the chevy d 60 front to achieve the 64.5" wms and keep leaf spring mounts. I also would suggest looking at a dodge dana 60 front with a 16" short shaft vs the 17 1/2 chevy, dodge has a 67.5 wms to wms. Gets you closer to the 63" rear or under to help with tire and rim selections.

Sorry for the partial repost of my reply in the above hp60 ford thread just above this one, but it also applies here.

16" short side dodge housing is 67-67.5" wms to wms, yields about 17" wms to cast in spring pad center, even on both sides so add another 17" then the approx 27" center to center spring on the cruiser end up with about 61-62" wms to wms. These axle are available with the none neckdown shafts and should be able to be resplined on the cut side.

Thanks guys,
Hi^C, I wasn't aware of the Dodge setup. That might be just what I'm looking for.

Woody, more backspacing would be the cheaper way to do it, but I like the suspension the way it's set up now. I don't think I'd want to bother with the outboarding.

Thanks again,

j

Woody, by running Hummer rims, doesn't the lock out end up sticking past the wheel? Are you then forced to run drive flanges?

Dave

Forced?
Nope..

Prudent... yes....

the hummer rims in stock form put the hub out into the world. But bigger tires and a tad less backspacing will fix that ;)

beanz, yeah but no, reportable you can get away with about a 1" spacer, or run a 14.50 wide tire and they are suppose to be covered. theres a thread on pirate in the cruiser section, that a HEEPER posted up about his heep and he was full width and hummers without spacers and he covers. I believe the heep was a red YJ?
BTW your ford outers i believe would be less length, I think.

Also keep in mind that with lots of backspacing you will rub your tires on the springs... A lot..

I mounted my 40x13.50 Iroks on the truck with stock BS. The hubs stuck out considerably more than an inch.. Still easy to smack on a rock..
