Supposed to take out the oil seal like this: (not my pic, and yes the axle shaft is out)

Is there another tool I'm supposed to be using...cause that thing won't fit in there at all.

Given you are replacing the oil seal - doesn't matter if you destroy it. Easiest is FIRST put finger in and pull out the spring on the inside of the oil seal so it doesn't drop into the guts of the axle tube and SECOND use a screwdriver with a hammer to crush/destroy the oil seal. Once a little crushed it will just pull straight out.

You can see the 'destroyed' oil seal ->

cheers,

I use a puller just like the one you have pictured.

I use that exact same tool too. Bought it from Sears. Matco does make a deluxe version that allows you to change the angle of the head but I don't think it's necessary in this application. I think you should go take a second stab at it; the two hooks are slightly different. Did you try both hooks?

I'm a total newb but wouldnt removing the axle make it a whole lot easier? Then you can bend in the sides like mentioned and grab with a pliers if needed?

x3. I bought mine from Sears also. I used it a lot with no problem.

It will fit in there. Just hook one side of the tool behind the seal and then pry it up and out. Takes no time at all using the seal puller you posted.

I either over or under thought this....

I was going at it with the knuckle in a straight position....like if the tires were pointed forward.

I turned the steering wheel full locked left and was able to get one of the hooks in there and pop it out.

Interestingly, an ordinary Park Tools bicycle pedal wrench also works....

I wish I had thought of that last week. Thanks for the tip!

I just used a big sized Channel lock wrench. It has a nice curve to the end of it. You don't have to pinch it. I just used the almost 90 degree side of the wrench to pry the seal out. I had it out in a few seconds.

opps need to read more,

yes I have a similar seal puller it does the job just fine
